Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekly/Weekend Ride Reports - July 25-Aug 1

Tell us about your cycling this week or over the weekend. Where did you go, what did you see, who did you ride with? What about other sports? What else are you doing to keep in shape?

Post photos if you've got them.

With the weather this weekend it looks like bicycling is done.

Monday - 77 miles
Tuesday - 51 miles, then stacked a cord of firewood
Wednesday - 101 miles
Thursday - 55 miles

Edit: Saturday I was able to do 20 miles with my son - put me over 300 mi for the week and over 4000 for the year.

Saturday -- Today we cycled 100.2 km on Bruny Island. We drove out to Kettering, caught an early ferry and spent the day on the island.

First we cycled out to Adventure Bay, and we stopped along the way for a few photos. In Adventure Bay we had an excellent lunch ... panini sandwiches and a large slice of carrot cake. Then we cycled to Alonnah, and on our way, we stopped and bought some fudge. And then we cycled back to the ferry again.

The day was fairly relaxed with a goal of covering 100 km without stress, and testing a few things.

One of the things I was testing was my new helmet. My previous helmet just hasn't been quite right, especially with a thick headband under it. It was either strangling me or blocking my vision and I was finishing rides with a really stiff neck and shoulders. Today I rode with my new helmet, and it was good! Hardly noticed it was there and my neck and shoulders feel normal.

Rowan was testing narrower handlebars, which seemed to pass the test.

I was testing a raised saddle height because it seems I've done something to my right knee which might be related to my new boots. Raising the saddle height does seem to be better, but it might need to come up a little bit more.

This was the second 100K during which we were testing new tires ... we tested them last weekend too. Rowan purchased Continental GP 4000s II and they do seem smoother and more comfortable.

And we were testing Bushells Coffee and Chicory Essence. We mixed up a bottle with Ensure and a decent amount of Bushells Coffee and Chicory Essence which contains 66 mg of caffeine for every 20 ml (2 tablespoons). Well ... it tasted good and I (who drank most of it) felt awake and energetic by the end of the ride!

It was about 10°C on the ferry going over ... and cooled to about 8°C at one point along the way out. But it did warm again to near 10°C in the middle of the ride. With the bright sunshine, which made a rare and welcome appearance, it felt quite a bit warmer than that. Toward the end of the day, it dropped to about 6°C ... and that's when my feet started getting cold again. I need to solve that problem soon!

Overall, it was a really good ride ... first one in this recent batch of training where I've felt really comfortable on the bicycle, like I could keep riding.

Distance: 100.2 km
Elevation: 1154 metres (3786 feet)
Moving Time: 5:38:49
Elapsed Time: 7:16:34

Mon- 25mi solo.. pretty mellow pace
Wed- 30mi mostly on the bike path getting my legs ready for thurs TT
Thurs - Local free time trial.. 8 miles mostly flat. I only have a road bike so i'm outgunned by the TT bikes but was fun anyway.. did almost 23mph 21:20-ish the Cat 1 guy who came with his TT bike did 16:15... not quite getting to his KOM of 16 flat (30mph) those guys are impressive.

Sat: 37mi with shop ride. had a mixed group so it wasn't anything killer but did a few hills harder
Sun: went out with the GF and we played around in the grass with her new-used CX bike. did a bunch of dismounts, which i had never tried before and did better than expected. Then on our way home I decided to make a segment up this abandoned road with a small incline. Hammered to the end and accidentally locked up the disk brakes on wet pavement. Rear tire went 80* to the side until it gave up and dumped me on my hip. Luckily all I hit was my hip (nice hematoma and road rash) and I only scratched the pedal (new ) and quick release. spent the rest of the day icing my hip and hip i can at least do the B ride tonight if my motion is ok.

Quiet week sadly. I'm on vacation this week in St. Augustine FL and had to get ready the prior week. I did take my bike with me and went for a 46 miles ride on Sunday. It was to a small FL town called Hastings and back. I'll have some pictures and details hopefully in next week's report.

Uploaded some photos, more later, but here is downtown Hastings view of Main street. Not a city on the move. Most of the store fronts were empty. I just saw another "serious" cyclist passing the other way. Right after I took this photo he turned around and asked me where he could pick up the bike trail. I couldn't help him since I was a tourist myself.

Mon- Success.. did the B ride to be conservative and my hip felt fine on the bike.. actually feels better than going up stairs. Did a few good hill efforts and probably could have hung in the A ride like normal. oh well it will make tomorrow's ride a bit easier. bit of rain got the temps down and was actually nice to ride in.

I've been slacking the last few weeks,

but got out for 70 miles on Saturday.

The club's century event is next week, so this was a prep ride,

but got posted late so the group was small.

The bad part was that I had a bottle eject on a descent,

ending the perfect record for these bottle cages.

Later, went to watch the annual local crit race- exciting!

Yea, I got off pretty easy. GF is not holding punches she tells people that i crashed her new bike I'm glad that it only has minor damage that a CX bike would get anyway. the bruise and scrape on my hip will heal up soon enough

going out again tonight with the A ride at another shop.. legs felt good yesterday so i think it will be fine.

Edit: did the A ride tonight.. 24mi w 1500' climbing legs felt great.. just a bandaid over the road rash to keep it from rubbing. no issues

RAMROD on July 28, 153 miles and 9117' by my Garmin. Bib #14, meaning 14th oldest out of 800 riders. Long story, but I bonked and started to cramp my hams about every 15 minutes at about the 70 mile point. I just kept going in itty bitty gears, eating and drinking as much as possible and stopping every time I cramped. 221st finisher.
