Cheapest way to replace 50 chainring with 53
Ultegra 50/34 11sp chainring. Just don't like the 50 looking to replace it with a 52 or 53. What would be the most cost effective way to do this?

34/53 won't work (derailleur limitations)
what don't you like?
(50/11 is taller than 53/12)
Gear chart using MPH @ 100 RPM
For 700 X 25 / 25-622 tire with 175 mm cranks
... 50 52 53
11 35.7
12 ... 34.0 34.7
13 ... 31.4 32.0

Shimano front derailleurs will work just fine with this combo, the Shimano specs are conservative and there's always room to stretch. On the other hand, it's hard to find a 53T ring that matches his cranks (110mm BCD). If OP has the newer 4 legged 6800 cranks, the 52T type MB (Y1P498070) should fit but it's not cheap ($>$100).

Can't really explain it. But, I miss the feel of the 52 on my old bike. It may also have something to do with the 172.5 crank versus the 175 crank. I realize I will probably have to replace the 34 with a larger chainring. Which is fine by me. I may use the 34 5% of the time. So a larger small chainring may be more useful.

it's most likely the crank length difference more than the chainring size. Sounds like it's time to replace the crank.

....and add another twenty-some-odd bucks for a new chain, too.

This. I used to ride a triple (52/42/30 w/11-26 cassette) and now am enjoying a 'mid-compact' 52/36 setup.
Initially I went with an 11-25 cassette and that was a little rough on longer climbs. I recently replaced that with an 11-28 and am happy with it.

To the OP: Google Wickwerks for the solution you are asking about.

I live in an area with bigger mountains than that and never really feel the need for more then 50/11 when descending. Sure I spin out but I can still get over 40mph and also being "older" and having a family and responsibilities etc I start to question what I'm doing when I get past 40mph. Guess everyone's different
