Wheels!?!?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheels!?!?

If there is a better sub forum please move. Also make maybe a sticky!

Hi, Newer cyclist here. Just started about a year ago Starting with a hybrid and then on to a used Trek 1.2 road bike. 4 months ago I bought a Specialized Roubaix SL4 Comp Disk! Well I'm excited anyways! This seems to be a good bike. Thinking long term to life. However, I'm not too sure about the wheel set. Already I've broken 2 spokes and lightly bent the same wheel in a minor collision. These are wimpy wheels! I'm looking into different disk wheel sets. My LBS (Local Bike Shop) pointed me to Mavoc. $500 to $1000. Let me be clear ... The $1k model specifically (mavoc Ksyrium Pro Disc). Slightly lighter(maybe) but stiffer rims and spokes.

What are your suggestion? I want a beefier wheel/spoke setup. Resistant to light road debrees or possible random breakage.

Thanks!

Look no further than Stans Grail for a bomb proof disc brake road wheel.

I like my Zipp 30 Course Disc wheelset, I think I paid $680 for them with my club discount.

Spokey how close in design those are to my OEMs....sorry for the pun.
Looks like nearly the same rim design, spokes, and spoke pattern.

If you are breaking spokes on a 32 spoke wheel, odds are the spokes are all tensioned wrong.

Have a good wheel builder take them down and retension and true them from scratch.

Cheapest fix for your problem and, barring crashes or accidents, probably the most permanent.

Um, you may be stuck with Specialized Roval wheels. You need to check first whether your frame is an SCS frame. If it is, I believe your options are limited to Specialized.

Also, you'll want to get those new wheels soon. Specialized is ditching SCS, so I don't know that they will be making them for long.

My bike is in the shop but they have Axis printed on the wheels.

OH I do have a photo somewhere! The have scs on them also.

My LBS is suggesting Mavic like it's no big deal.

I'm no longer a fan of Mavic. Their customer service is nonexistant and I've seen several premature failures. I had an Aksium spoke pull through the rim (first time having that happen) a Ksyrium hub broke badly on a friend after only 4k of easy club miles.

That is probably an Axis 4.0 SCS wheel. Which is a 24 spoke wheel. Also note that SCS is not compatible with most other hubs. I think they have a replacement dropout you can use to make it work but best to research this before just buying some wheel thinking it will work.
