Old "surfer" motorist rages on cyclist -- "You're a dead man"

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This was posted in another forum. My response is the same that I wrote there: I admire the cyclist's restraint, and I wish I had that ability. However, as ashamed as I am to admit it, I would have parked my bike in his anus after about 10 seconds.

That would be elder abuse. Or animal abuse. Abuse of an old goat. I have no idea how a guy that old, can be mouthing off like that.

LOL .... here in Cambridge UK a couple of years ago, a very similar situation occured .... the cyclist ended up by picking up his steel mountain bike and smashed it through the guy's front windscreen, injuring the driver who was attempting to speed off

It wasn't his business, his name is Robert Lewis, not Jack Dunn (going off memory, might be a bit off)

Regardless, I admire that cyclist for showing restraint.

I though I read that the motorist struck him with the mirror on his car?

I know... my hats off to that guy showing that level of restraint. My fuse would have been done about 4 seconds into that video and would have hurt that old man. I would have felt really bad about it afterward as well.

Nah, bike's too expensive.

I would be inclined towards a helmet head-butt into the bridge of his nose.

And maybe followed by a cleat to the crotch...

Seems like a kinda dirty move, I know, but it's a dirty world out there.

Those kind of guys want you to fight them. Saw it a few times they'd bait someone and then use all sorts of dirty tricks. Apparently if you agree to fight you can't claim the person assaulted you.

Kind of amazing-it's not easy to keep your composure, well done. I do like the cool groove party music in the last couple minutes; I expect someone to ask the old guy if he wants to smoke some grass and just mellow out!

Never ceases to amaze me how drivers fail marketing 101 and don't realize that they're the worst advertisement possible for their businesses. I see vehicles with the business name on the side doing the most boneheaded maneuvers on the road, whether I'm driving or cycling. I had an incident with an aggressive 18 wheeler tailing me by mere inches because the fast lane was blocked (not by me but a line of cars ahead of me), flashing his lights, etc.

I noted the name of the business on the cab, and called the cops. Nice officer called me later to ask if I wanted to press charges; they identified the driver and had a little "talk" with the business owner, who said he would have his own talk with his employee as "it's my name, not his, on the side of my truck". I didn't press charges. I figured the little lesson in marketing 101 with his boss would be enough.

I'm thinking more an more that a dash cam for my car and a helmet cam for my bike would be useful additions to the arsenal.

According to county records, he is the owner of the window washing company on his shirt.

Imagine the response you'd get if you were one of his customers and not happy with the work!

If you google that company, you can get his address, phone number, and a street view photo of his house.

Depends on the cops and department. Years ago we had a stalker record multiple death threats on our answering machine, multiple incidents over a period of months, the phone company traced it to a guy in a weekly rate hotel, and the cops didn't do anything with it.

I don't think surfer dude realizes just how lucky that the cyclist didn't go ninja on him.
Think about it. Surfer dude's gotta be pushing 60, overweight, probably hasn't been winded from serious exercises in over 10 years. Cyclist dude probably attempts strava segments, long rides up hills, and long tough rides.

If the surfer dude doesn't get a good punch in a 10 seconds, he'd be winded so quick, cyclist dude would thrash him about like a ragdoll soon after.

That's about right. If you've got that threat on camera, may as well take advantage of the opportunity to rage on some driver...we've all wanted to do that at some point.

That brings to mind a local towing service that has a history of beating customers who come in to retrieve their cars. They lost their city contract (AAA contract, too), but they're still in business.

I'd have to agree with you on that. If he hadn't been caught he'd be sitting somewhere that night bragging to his buddies how he read some cyclist the riot act that day and how the cyclist backed down etc.

My guess is that it wasn't the cyclist but something else going on with that guy that day that lit him up like that over basically nothing. You can hear the trembling in the guys voice, he has no experience in highly charged volatile situations and was coming unglued.
