Your Weekend/Weekly Cycling Reports - Aug 15-22

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mon: Fast monday shop ride. good times as usual. might have to cut off a few miles next week.. it's getting darker :/
wed: easy-ish 25mi a bit less easy than i wanted due to the wind but not too bad
Thurs: different shop ride. though with many of the usual folks. got a pinch flat on an pavement split.. luckily one of the guys in the group is faster than a Nascar pit crew at changing a tire.. no levers for on or off.. crazy fast. then we did about 10mi more than i thought we were going to and it was getting pretty dark by the end.

Fri: GF and I might do a fun gravel/dirt road TT free semi-organized thing later today. she will be the lucky one on her CX bike and i'll probably take the mtn bike. I have done the section on my road bike but my hands and wrists don't enjoy the washboard so i'll take the time penalty haha

Saturday -- 38.5 km in about 2 hours.

Cool, with a high of about 11C. Overcast and some wind.

This weekend is a bit of a recovery weekend after a big effort last weekend.

Saw something white on the side of the road under the guardrail while climbing a big hill. Should I turn around? Yeah, probably worth a look. It's an iPhone 6+ undamaged. Phone is locked so used Siri to "call Mom" and connected. Phone was returned to 16 year old Emma.

Sunday -- 36 km ride near Seven Mile Beach. It's a mostly flat ride, with one hill which we cycle up and over, and then up and over on the way back.

High temp while we were out there was about 12C, so slightly warmer than usual. And windy as usual. We had the occasional little spit of rain as well.

Sat: 30mi mostly solo.. group ride was going back to roads we do all the time and i wanted to mix it up. they ended up going further than i would have wanted anyway so it worked out.
Sun: Got on the mountain bike and did 9mi with the shop guys. pulled up the rear of the novice group and was still really rusty. Towards the end we got on more trails like i used to ride and started to click a bit.

After monday's ride i thought i would go easy this week.. apparently not.. 145mi and only tuesday was fully off might end up doing B ride tomorrow night

Edit: check that. GF was trying to get 100km today so i went and did the last 10mi with her. 155mi for the week. hoping the smooth pedaling was a good stretch for my legs

My wife and I are bumping into our 50s, but have been riding for a few years. About a year ago my daughter and her husband (early 20s) got road bikes and ride with us once a week - usually around the 20-25 mile mark.

They felt that they were ready for something longer, so this past weekend we took a 56 mile ride (out and back) on a MUP, with a nice lunch break in the middle. Let's just say the OLD folks were doing MUCH better than the young whippersnappers at the end of the ride.

They are finally talking to us again!!

Looking at Strava, so far this past week (Monday-Sunday), 250.4 km and 3166 m of elevation gain. Yesterday was a 65.2 km in Acadia Park in Maine, with 1113 m elevation gain. I just got a new CF road bike a month ago and it's a real mountain goat, set 27 PRs on yesterday's hilly ride, and a total of 40 PRs, 2nds and 3ds (Acadia Park is a regular destination for us).

I rode with my wife and son. We're 58, our son is 21. My wife and I did the Cadillac mountain climb, but our own young whippersnapper bailed My wife is jealous of the bike and since it's a close fit for her as well she's threatening to relegate me to her 23 y.o. steel Marinoni to go up the mountain tomorrow (rain day today). I beat her by 3:45 minutes yesterday and she said she'll beat me by 8 tomorrow by riding my new bike. For a "win" she therefore can't beat me by more than 3:45 minutes (it's all friendly rivalry!)

The other rides for the past week were 97 km/1181 m, 88 km/866 m and 63 km/538 m, all in Quebec's Eastern Townships where we happen to live.

Sunday I went on a monthly group ride sponsored by a local bike shop. After 20 miles on A1A in Palm Beach, i had to drop out as the group was averaging 25 mph+. When i returned to the shop i found out the "group" included of a bunch of Colombian pro riders. At 61 years old i was quite impressed with myself that i hung with them so long!

Well, I agree - but I think the kids figured if Mom & Dad can do it, obviously we can do it.
It was kind of fun listening to them whine a little!

Did this solo on Saturday:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/15558908

It was hot and humid, and I had a headwind the entire second half. Supposed to lead it as a group ride this coming Saturday. Saw a bear last year while doing this route.

Missed out on riding in the evening this past week. Mostly getting ready for daughter's departure to university on Friday and Saturday. Sunday did 50 miles round trip to daughter's university to take pic with mascot statue and send her a text so she would know I was thinking of her.

Only one perfunctory morning ride durning the week, then the Ramapo Rally on Sunday: Officially 101 miles, 5204' around northern New Jersey. Although I wasn't too worn out at the end, and I did better than I planned to (was going to just do the 62 mile), I have to say that every other long ride I've done was more enjoyable. Oh well, can't win 'em all....

I went out Monday evening for my usual Davis Is. 33 mile ride. I finally got my wish and after riding in the heat for an hour it started to rain. Sadly, it wasn't very long and made the roads all steamy. Not a terribly pleasant ride...summer go away.
