Random noise randomness
We've all had that annoying sound on a bike that we can't find or get rid of.
Usually we blame it on the bottom bracket, but more often than not it is something else entirely like a loose wheel skewer, dirty seat post, loose cassette lock ring, dry threads on the pedals or the need to oil the crossings of your spokes.
I've got a new one for your list...
When changing a flat I noticed that something was inside my rim just gently tinkling as the wheel spun around. Not big, but could be heard when you had the wheel beside your ear. I think I had heard it before but dismissed it.
It wasn't a damaged spoke (i.e. loose nipple) as everything felt ok with a quick test, so I pulled the rim tape off and started shaking.
Stuff fell to the floor. Small pieces of metal which I deduced (from colour, shape etc) were swarf from the hole drilling process. Probably was just hanging on after drilling and the wheel build, but loosened up over a couple of years of riding.
Strange, but now solved.
