Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike - Flat Bar

Hi from Australia,

Slowly getting into cycling and want to upgrade my chunky old Hybrid with something newer.

Looking at a Flat bar road bike.

Wanting to increase my fitness levels and clock up around 20-30km a week. Mainly bike paths and road.

Have my eyes on the Cannondale Quick 4 2016 at the moment or another similar with carbon fork

I'm tall @ 6'4" and 42 y/o. What frame size do you suggest?

Want a light framed bike with carbon forks.

My budget is no more than $1000 (AUD) for the bike.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Cheers

Muzza

Rather than suggesting a specific bike, I suggest that you shop for a local bike shop. There are a number of flat-bar bikes that should fit your budget, but it's incredibly valuable to find a shop that will assist you and help you get an appropriate frame size and any extra components you might find useful.

For what it's worth, I do think the Cannondale Quick is a very good bike, but the bike brand matters less than getting one that fits you well, and establishing a relationship with a good bike shop can be a huge benefit down the road.

Have fun, and good luck with your hunt!

Buy a proper road bike. You already have a hybrid.

If the goal is to be less clunky put some nice tires on the bike you have.

If the goal is to have a road bike to be faster, get a real road bike.

At 30km/week goal (AKA ~3 miles per day), then I'd say just head to a store, find something that fits well and looks good.

Specialized Sirrus
Trek Fx

Both were good bikes, imo, from riding both recently while helping a family member choose a bike.

I looked it up, $2,500??

If you want a flat bar full carbon bike, it's hard to beat the value of the Specialized Sirrus which they sell in full carbon for $1,300.
