Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road vs. Anyroad

I currently have an 2002 full carbon, full Ultegra road bike, i ride 60 to 80 mile per week on road l, 18 mph average speed.
I am a little intrigued by the Giant Anyroad comax due to the more upright position.
What do i loose or gain if i switch.
Will I be disapointed?
Thanks

Can't make a very educated answer without knowing exactly what kind of bike you are on now. Assuming you are on a bike with standard road/race geometry then Anyroad won't just be more upright, it would be extremely upright. You could go with a Defy or any number of endurance bikes and get more upright. The Anyroad is a very upright bike like a beach cruiser with drop bars....you can decide if that's a pro or con. It's also ugly but that's eye of the beholder. Pros are more upright and fits wider tires and has interrupter brake levers (although I also see that as a con). Obviously will be lower due to extreme upright position. But it can't hurt to test ride since we don't know exactly what you want. But probably test Defy too while you are there which is a great endurance road bike.

Are wider tires, offroad riding, adding racks and paniers etc things you want to do?

Can't tell if you would be disappointed because I don't know what you would be expecting. The riding position is more upright---most builds i have seen online have the bars at or above saddle height. it had mechanical discs ...at leas tin the reviews I read. it weighs 21 lbs and has compact crank, 11x28 Ultegra.

The bike seems to be designed for rough pavement or packed earth/gravel. I am sure itwould be a little slower on the road than a road bike but might be more comfortable. Don't know what to tell you.

This is where most posters ask, "What is wrong with your other bike, that you are considering this one? What is your old bike not doing that you think this one would?"

I currently have a Trek 5200. Nothing wrong with it. Just thinking it might be more comfortable, more modren hood design, different geometry. But if i loose a ton of speed, handeling characteristics i would be happy.

Short answer...go test ride one. If you like it more than your current bike make the switch.

Just due to disc brake rub and tire size, you'll lose a little speed on the road.

But you'll gain the ability to ride off road some as well.

The 32c tires might have a very slight effect on speed but "disc brake rub" is only something one would need to worry about if the bike is set up incorrectly or the caliper mounts are not flush from the manufacturer.

Re: tire width if anything it's the tread on those tires that would slow the bike down slightly. You can get nice, supple smooth tread 32c tires (like these Compass beauts) and it will be just as fast as a skinnier tire in 95% of conditions.

But even the most supple 32c tires may add a pound of weight to your bike over 25c

Hood design has nothing to do with the frame. Handling characteristics? Check the geometry, check headtube angle, trail, wheelbase .... but this is an endurance bike. It is not designed to slalom. It will likely be .... normal. I doubt you would notice a difference.

if you want different geometry, you will get different handling ... . not better or worse. More comfort? What makes your Trek Uncomfortable? Do you have it set up properly to suit your body and your ability?

Speed? Speed is 95 percent the rider, not the bike. Unless you go from a road bike to a fat bike, you shouldn't lose much speed. However ... if your trek is carbon fiber with light wheels and skinny tires, it might be very marginally quicker than the Anyroad, which will come from the factory (as a rule, as will any bike) with heavy wheels and heavy tires, you might Feel that you are slower because it will take a good deal more work to accelerate.

Just go ride it. See how it feels.

You're definitely going to lose some speed due to the riding position. Probably 1-2 mph on the flats, assuming you'd go more upright.

Having said that, there's no way to get a more upright position without sacrificing speed, unless you want an e-bike.

Only you will know, and only after riding.

I had one for a while. I liked the idea of flexibility to go anywhere I wanted. In reality, I settled on riding only on the road and it was a pig on the road. I was glad to have moved it on.

I have a Giant Anyroad. I love the bike. I use it primarily for commuting, but since I was fit for both my Raleigh Revenio I and the Giant, I have used both on centuries. I finish a century in around 7 hours, including stops at all sags. So I run both bikes at about 15 mph. That said, if I was in a hurry and I was side by side with myself, I would get there quicker on my Revenio when all is said and done.

I swapped out the original tires on the Anyroad and use Serfas Tuono 32mm. A great tire IMHO. The Anyroad is a lot more comfortable ride on the chip and seal roads we have here in NW IN.

If I was in the market now though for a similar bike, I would go with the Revolt.. Longer wheelbase, with a splashguard on the frame to keep crapola off.

I think the Anyroad is way more comfortable
