Hand position

When just cruising along, where do most people keep their hands? The hoods, the curve in the bar behing the hoods, the tops, the drops?

DC_Emily 05-19-05 11:37 AM

usually on top, close to the stem. unless it's windy, then I'll chill at the end of the drops.

pogoman 05-19-05 11:38 AM

brake pads/hoods

Smaug 05-19-05 11:41 AM

60% on the hoods.

30% on the top.

10% in the drops.

Sometimes on the curve near the top, just to mix it up a little.

operator 05-19-05 11:55 AM

80% aero bars, 10% hoods, 10% drops.

I mostly group ride, and ride on the hoods until we start approaching a designated sprint zone - at that point I transition to the drops. In the early part of the ride before we start hammering, I will spend some time on the tops.

hoods meant to write hoods. but when I feel extreme I use the pads.

Conundrum 05-19-05 02:45 PM

Curve behind the hoods when really chillin out. Other than that hoods with the wind, drops into the wind - really flat and windy where I am.

webist 05-19-05 03:07 PM

About evenly split between tops and hoods. Seldom in the drops.

Patriot 05-19-05 03:10 PM

I move around constantly. My mother always said I was an antsy kid. ;)

Avalanche325 05-19-05 03:16 PM

75% hoods
25% drops (sometimes up front by the brakes, sometimes a little further back)
8% curves
2% top (I just don't like it there that much)

That's right, baby! I'm givin' it 110%!!!!

twahl 05-19-05 03:16 PM

I'm on the tops probably 40%, hoods 25%, top bends 20%, and either the bend or the drops the other 15%.

Adgooroo 05-19-05 03:36 PM

Hoods - 75%
Curve - 10%
Straight/near stem - 10%

Everywhere.
The whole idea behind having that design is to give you options....move your hands a lot to avoid that falling asleep feeling.

Sawtooth 05-19-05 04:00 PM

Curves: 70%
Hoods: 25%
Drops: 5%

biker7 05-19-05 04:00 PM

How do you guys do an emergency brake from the hoods? I can never get a nice strong hold on the brakes from my hand resting on the hoods (maybe I just have bad brakes). Also, when you get on the drops, do you hold your fingers out to the brakes? Doesn't it hurt/get numb after a while if you do that?

Geoff326 05-19-05 05:41 PM

i ride mostly in the drops, weird, i'd think that most ppl would ride mostly in the drops but seems like most of u ride the least in the drops. i find the drops most comfortable and i also have quick access to brakes and full breaking power compared to when on hoods. i find the hoods the most uncomfortable and get less braking power when on em.

i'll stick my fingers out to the brakes while in the drops when i see anything that might require braking, otherwise it's just gripping the drops cuz it doesn't take that long to reach the brakes from the drops anyway.

I hold one finger on the brake lever. Like holding a gun with your finger resting above the trigger.

You should be able to do an emergency brake from the hoods. If you can't, your bike is set up incorrectly. The bars may be too big, the angle maybe incorrect or there could be other issues. In fact, you'll notice that most people spend most of their time on the hoods and get fitted for riding the bike in this position.
