Annoying Map Your Ride Sleep Problem on Android

Has anyone worked out a fix for this?

When your phone goes to sleep MapYourRide keeps on working and giving you updates per mile etc. but the phone is not reactive (i.e. the screen is just black). I can restart the phone and MYR will remember the old route, but now the GPS doesn't work so I need to restart the phone again and it then does work.

The MYR tech support says its a well known Android problem and due to battery saver being on and to turn it off. But I already have it off so that can't be it.

Easy fix. Use a Garmin.

Phones should do everything.

I'm upgrading mine and newer phones don't even have built-in universal remote controls anymore. :( Now I need to put batteries in my TV remote. Anarchy and nihilism.

I use a Roku so there's an app for that. I only use it if I lose the remote though.

Use Strava.

There's an Android app that will prevent your phone from going to sleep. (Probably a setting too?)

I use Strava for riding but also run a lot and use Map my Run on an android phone for my running. I don't have the problem you are describing.

You say your phone becomes unresponsive and that you have to restart. For me, I just start MMR and then lock the phone (one light/quick touch on the power button) and put it in a pocket. When I stop, I just unlock the phone. I would look closely at your power settings and put them back to default if they have been changed.

Can you lock/unlock your phone with other apps running? For instance, if you are using Google Maps navigation, with the phone locked you will have a dark screen but should still get spoken directions.

There is an app:
No Screen Off (4.4)
Which keeps the screen on. Just click the button and it disables the screen off. Click on it again and it returns to your previous settings.

It will chew up the battery a bit quicker, but can be handy if you wish to use the application for real-time viewing such as a speedometer.

I haven't used MapMyRide. I have RideWithGPS and Strava. Neither of them will crash the phone, although Strava will occasionally cash, and RWGPS might lose a feature such as real time cumulative elevation. RideWithGPS has a feature called "Handlebar Mode" which allows the application to be active without unlocking the screen (no screen swipe).

GPS not working is odd. There is a GPS on/off on the status/settings screen. Pull down from the top. Sometimes toggling it helps. I find my GPS is very slow to activate when the sky is obscured (inside, tall trees, etc). Go to an open field, and it activates much quicker.

I can't believe that MMR would have a bug that required a restart if your phone screen went off. That seems like too major a bug. There must be some kind of issue with your phone.
