Under what conditions would you consider a 1x11??

I like small one or two tooth jumps between gears too much to use a wide range cassette.

I might go 1x11 for an MTB that I wasn't planning on riding fast on.

I went with Sram Rival 1 on a Canondale SuperX. I wanted a foul weather bike with hydro disc wide tires and a simple drivetrain. It came with a 40T and 11-28. I changed to a 11-32 and put 32mm all weather tires on it.

The bike is awesome and there are gaps but I can live with it.

my 1x11. 44 tooth chainring and 10-42 tooth cassette. I just finished the build, but have been enjoying the wide range cassette.

Believe it or not, I can even pedal on flat ground...

I did it on my commuter because the frame I wanted wasn't disc compatible but I could easily fit a disc fork to it. I also rarely use my rear brake, preferring the more powerful front so having the disc there and lighter weight brake in back makes sense from a weight-saving perspective.

But then I have 3 bikes and the 1x fits for the type of riding I have that bike for.

Just like I wouldn't take a TT bike off road, i wouldn't want a 1x for mountain roads.

My MTB is 3x, road bike is 2x and cross bike is 1x.

I wasn't. I can't stand the loss of high end triple groups. I hate choosing between a big gap in my chainrings and top or low end gearing. I had it all with a 3x10. Building a Chorus bike now and still undecided if I'll stick with the 50/34 or go 48/34 or 46/34. And I'm not thrilled about the 12/29 cassette either knowing how nicely spaced a 12/25 11 speed is. 52/42/30 and 12/25 or 12/27 and I'd be loving it.

I took my mtb from 3x to 1x and couldn't have been happier.

With a compact up front, the only time I need to shift to the small ring is when I'm climbing and even then, I might jsut skip it and stay in the 50t and not worry about it.

I'm considering it for my cheap commuter. Right now its stock triple crankset isn't even fully utilized and therefore needlessly complex to operate and maintain. A 44t ring with a 10-42 cassette would fit my needs well. Make it belt drive and... Jeez maybe I should just buy a Spot Wazee.

I have a friend who has ridden fixed gear bikes at PBP twice, Furnace Creek 508 3 times, etc.
To each their own, but my favorite gearing is a triple with 52x11 high and 30x28 low and lots in between.
Having said that, I usually ride a 50-34 with a 13-29 cassette. I don't see any advantage to a 1x set-up on a road bike.
