Under what conditions would you consider a 1x11??

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Under what conditions would you consider a 1x11??

Clearly, you should not let them ride your mountain bike.

30 seconds was at 19-21mph. Seems pretty pro to me. Those are big power numbers if I have ever seen any. Like I said, he's a different cyclist than me. He's climbing 12.5% grades in a 50/14. I barely ever get to that combo without a tailwind or downgrade.

When I became aware of it, I thought it might be neat, but....
First of all:

Second, if the point is simplification, why have 11 cogs?
Of any multi-gear 1x setups, I'd only get one for an all-weather, ride-around-town bike, and it would have only one cog, but an S3X hub.

On hills the change needed from one gear to the next is not as critical as on the road when a breeze comes up or a 1% grade comes up and you want to just change your gearing a tiny bit to keep that perfect cadence. Even changing from a closely spaced 11 cog to a 12 cog makes for a significant difference in cadence and that's no big deal if, for instance, you'r'e about to hit a 3% grade but if you just hit a bit of a minor headwind and want to maintain a comfortable 90rpm (you put in the comfortable number) then having closely spaced gearing is, IMHO, a HUGE positive and I would NEVER put a 1x11 system on a typical road bike. If I were the ruler of the universe it would be illegal !
This. I was happy with a double until a move to Oklahoma. Flat as anything, but the insano winds drove me to a TRIPLE so I could space the cassette as tight as mathematically possible.

And maybe this is the best reason. But really, front shifting is so good now, unless you run SRAM, that I don't see what the issue is.

yep
for commuting/putting-around in most cities in the world, a 1 gear setup is ideal. thats how ive rolled for years.

for something like a pittsburgh terrain, id up it to an internal 3x

I have Sram Red22 and the front shifting is faultless.
