Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BB30A shim placement

I put my BB30A crankset together using the official Cannondale instructions, per attached. I'm a little confused, since I've previously seen the non-drive-side soft shim against the bearing shield, followed by the wave washer. (And I think that's how the bike originally came, before I replaced the crankset.) I've seen videos online with the same setup. But according to the Cannondale diagram, the wave washer sits right up against the bearing shield, followed by the soft shim.

Does it matter? Am I just being OCD? Or could having the hard wave washer against the bearing shield put pressure on the bearings?

Thanks all--

The wave washer is merely there to take up freeplay and if the set-up is correct, the lateral force against the bearing (via the bearing shield) will be minimal. If you have excessive preload, the cranks will not spin properly and conversely, if you have less than proper preload, the cranks will move laterally. The wave washer can take up a fair bit of play (lateral movement) - around 2-3mm - if required.

I would simply put it together as per the diagram.

cheers
