2014 Trek Madone 2.1 need help with BB

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2014 Trek Madone 2.1 need help with BB

First off, my name is Ryan and I'm new to road cycling. I bought my first bike almost two years ago and have fallen in love with this sport.

I have recently acquired a very lightly used 2014 Madone 2.1 and have thoroughly enjoyed this bike. The only thing is I'd like to upgrade the group set to the 5800 105 11 speed. This bike came from the factory with the 5700 105 10 speed group set with generic brakes and Shimano R565 crank set.

The existing components are in decent condition but I plan on converting the entire bike into the new 105 group set as things begin to wear past their limits.

I am planning the update to this bike, but I'm left confused with what I need to install the new 105 5800 crank? How would I know what bottom bracket I currently have and whether it is compatible with the new 105 5800 crankset I plan on ordering? Can someone please help point me to some helpful information?

It would also be very helpful if someone can tell me the specialty tools required to replace the crank/bottom bracket.

You can just replace the existing crank with the 5800 105. 5700 and 5800 both use Hollow Tech 2. You'll need a hex wrench and a special wrench to tighten the preload cap.

I recommend the BBT-9 tool. (You need that black part of the wrench, which tightens the preload cap on the left crankarm) You can find cheaper versions as well, but this just an example of the tool you need. The larger end of the tool is for external threaded bottom brackets. You don't need this since your BB is press fit.

Bottom Bracket Tool | Park Tool

Or you can just buy the preload cap tool here:

If you want to replace the bottom bracket itself, you'd need a press fit tool and a new BB86 bottom bracket.

Perfect, thank you so much. It is helpful that you've confirmed this for me.

To compliment the new groupset, I've purchased new inner and outer cables, but the outer cables do not fit the connection point at the brake. Meaning the outer cable is too big to fit inside the tension adjuster at the brakes.

Is there a standard size inner and outer cable for the 105 group? 4mm or 5mm?
