Carbon ????
I am in the market for a new road bike and I am unsure which way to go? I currently do approx 200-250 KM per week, which includes a weekly criterium race and usually a 75+km group ride on the weekends.
What are the benefits of a Carbon frame? Is it lighter? Is it durable? What wheel set would be the best compromise between weight and reliability?
Any help would be appreciated……

Few questions... height and weight is one, budget is two. ou are asking two extremems here... the carbon is great for longer group rides, etc, a stiff al or Ti bike is better for criterium racing...

I upgraded to a Trek 5000 this year. I had been riding a 15 year old Cannondale Criterium frame. The most noticable thing to me is the weight difference. I originally looked at the Madone but the LBS had trouble locating a larger frame for me.

Get one soon. They're going to be even more expensive as there is now a carbon fiber shortage according to the Weng fellow in that article. Blame aerospace and defense industries. That Look, Cervelo, or Colnago you were thinking about scoring? Sorry, it's in the wing of that new Airbus A380.

It's not just about weight. Carbon absorbs vibration heck of a lot better than the other lightweight materials which is why a lot of the aluminum frames out there are using carbon forks, rear seatstays etc. It's super light but also allows for a much more comfortable ride.

I do not think you will have a problem with a carbon frame then. There are so many wheel choices out there, most stuff will work for you though, mavic, bontrager, american classic, etc.
Aluminium is still better for crits though for its flex resistance and power transfer.

For racing, alu with carbon stays. Training, carbon for sure. I am going on my 3rd carbon frame. They will eventually squeak at the BB.

IS there a real shortage of carbon or isit basis of economics. High demand equals a high price.
Carbon makes a wonderful bike. I would not ttrade my calfee for anything. Good Luck with your new bike purchase. -
