Strava/iPhone Problem - Shutdown

Yes, I know there is an "electronics" forum but I think there is more experience with Strava here.

I am running the Strava App in my iPhone 6s. Latest iOS.

For the past several weeks, when I am riding and running Strava, the phone shuts down and acts like the battery is drained. Even though it really has 40-60% power left. A reset starts the phone up but within a few seconds the stupid low battery mode comes back. Plugging into power solves problem and battery back instantly to 50% or whatever it was before phone shut down. This is a new problem, did not happen a few months ago (phone is 1 year old).

This ONLY happens when running Strava App. When using phone otherwise, does not happen and I can use all the way down to 1% power.

I am thinking it's a Strava (or possibly GPS) software issue that "fools" the iOS into thinking the battery is dead when it's not.

Any suggestions?

Some iPhone 6s have a battery issue. Check to see if yours is one of them. Apple is replacing the phone/battery.

If I ever have to use my phone to track a ride, I prefer to do it with the CycleMeter app and transfer that info to Strava. CycleMeter does not use cell data to track, just GPS. It is far easier on the battery.

I'd call it a battery problem. Upgrade to iphone 7:cry:

My iPhone does this when it's cold, like I'm running or riding outside and it's in the low 30's or lower. When I get home and plug it in it'll come back on like nothing happened.

This. There is a known issue with the 6s.

I have heard of the battery issue. But I am doubting it's the battery, as the battery works FINE in every other way. Only messes up when running Strava.

Is that still possibly a battery problem? I am no tech guru, but if the battery is a problem, why would it ONLY declare itself during Strava?!?

After you are running Strava and the phone reports low battery... how long does the phone stay on? Does it recover without plugging in?

I've found on Android that Strava chews up batteries at 2x or 3x the normal standby rate with the screen off. If I force the screen to stay active (No Screen Off app), then batteries chew up even faster.

Ahh...
Here is a description of Apple's problem.

It sounds like you may be hitting the "Unexpected Shutdown" that they are reporting.

It may not be related to running Strava. It might be related to biking with the phone causing vibration, or how you carry the phone on the bike.

Apple's iPhone 6s Battery Bug Extends Further Than First Thought

You symptoms happen to exactly match a recently discovered issue with the iPhone 6s. That makes it significantly more likely to be a phone issue rather than a Strava software issue.

OK, I checked and my serial number IS part of the battery recall. I will have that replaced and see if it solves the problem. Still seems funny that it was NOT an issue a few months ago and ONLY happens with Strava running, but my knowledge base in these matters is weak.

Thanks for the tips, I will try to remember to bump thread with update on whether battery swap solves the problem.

At first I was going to give you a hard time for venturing into the 41, but then I realized I also have a 6S with a battery that drains randomly. Now I'm checking my serial number as well.

Looks like mine is also eligible for replacement.

Interesting. I wonder if replacing it will mean they have to take off my screen protector? That'd be annoying.
