Poll: How old are you?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good for you. I envy you. Broke my left femur 9/26, a date that will live in infamy, and still mending. Using a stationary bike as part of thrice a day PT exercises. I'm told I will be all good to go again by spring at the latest.

Yeah, when I was that age I wasn't posting to online forums either.

Oh wait, there were no online forums!

The other sports I do (sea kayaking, ski mountaineering/telemark) are probably skewed even older. The anecdotal pattern in my sports is that age of participants trends up as cost of equipment and role of experience/knowledge increases.

One other factor that may be at play is that I think fear may play a larger role in keeping people out than it used to. As sports have become more formalized, so has the pervasiveness of credentialing which has the effect of making people think they are incapable of dealing with threats/challenges they will face. Also, for whatever reason, young people seem less inclined towards physically demanding activities that demand a lot of time to do and get good at.

The online forums that I was using at 30 were Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) and then News groups once they converted over to the internet.

At 27 I had mastered my first real computer, Commodore Pet, with tape drive for memory. But you could play Pong. Worked at Intel, the 3rd or 4th leading supplier of computer memory chips, we had yet to announce the first microprocessor. Silicon Valley was studying Japanese labor methodology. There was no Internet.

Bicycles were a great thing back then as they are today. Some things change a lot, some change only a little.

Well the poll data is consistent with the popularity of the "finally a bell I can put on my road bike" thread.

After almost a week of voting, it looks like just under 11% of posters are under 30 years of age, while almost 44% are over 50.

Interesting, and not totally surprising.

We have to realize there could potentially be a significant gap between

1. Those who ride road bikes
2. Those who are aware of and willing to participate in this survey

As a result, the age distributions gathered from this poll might not be as a good representation of those who actually ride on the roads.

Right, which is why I acknowledge in the original post that I'm just wondering about this specific forum. No way to correlate the ages of posters here to the overall median for all cyclists.

The poll is about chronological age, right? Because if it's mental age I didn't see a 10-12 option .
