Rim tape
 

Just got my Zipp 303 back from the hub recall and it looks like i can not reuse the original rim tape.

Should I buy new Zipp tape or use whatever the LBS has in stock?

I've seen videos where they use electrical tape but real rim tape is cheap enough.

BTW, i got the wheel back in 9 days after sending it in... pretty fast.

Electrical tape isn't up to the task because it'll stretch and eventually blow through.

However any ballistic, fiber reinforced tape will serve. I use fiberglass reinforced strapping tape, not to save money, but because it's thinner and makes tire mounting easier.

In any case, it's not a big deal either way, use whatever suits your preference.

How many PSIs you run in them?

Get the correct width!

Do 2 layers of the last 2 if going over 100PSI. Under 100psi 1 layer likely will do.

Electrical tape OVER a mis-sized of one of the above is a good way to make things soft for tubes, but you need a stiff material going over spoke holes.

They also have the Zipp... $7 for 2 wheels so cost is not a issue.

Time is not a issue since i'm using the CX bike until Spring.

I'm a bit miffed that Zipp didn't install new tape. I understand no tires, tubes or QR. but tape must cost them $1 to do one wheel.

When you visit AZ this winter, beers are on me.

Use two wraps of 1 mil Kapton tape. 19mm/.75" for wide rims, 16mm/.675" for classic.

It's the thinnest tape which makes the difference between cussing at tools on tight rims and hand mounting. .0054" for two wraps versus .020" for Velox, .018" for Zipp, .0132" for two wraps of Scotch 898, and .011" for two wraps of Stans.

It has weak adhesive for easy removal.

It's lightest.

It's least expensive - under $0.50 a wheel when you get two 36 yard rolls for $7.50 shipped, still $1.13 for one $9 roll from Amazon.

Several bike companies sell shorter rolls for tubeless conversion with higher price tags.

Decided to send a email to Zipp last night explaining that they should of put new rim tape on after replacing the hub. I got a reply this morning at 7:30am that they will send me new rim tape next week when the warehouse comes back from break.

In the end, it all works out.

I saw that in another post and while they look interesting, i'll stick with what's proven for now.

I wonder if using them and a tubeless conversion kit would be more effective than just the kit alone.

I usually do two layers of Scotch 8896 or 8898 if you want more adhesive. It's good for tubeless and smooth so good for latex tubes.
