Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In the Yucatan? How cold are we talking, 65 in the morning and 78 in the afternoon?

I hardly even want a base layer on unless it's below 60.

I recently bought a new bike. The literature says that it is woven with Kevlar fibers. Since bullet proof vests are made of Kevlar does that mean that I can shoot my bike and it won't be harmed?

Only one way to find out, though the forces while stationary would be different. I'd recommend having someone you trust fire the round while you're pedaling past them, preferably at 20+ mph.

20 mph...

So I should be in the 34/28 gearing.

I think you want to be in the 34/20 gearing peddling at 34 RPM. The front chainring # represents the RPM you need to maintain to achieve the rear cog MPH number.

Maybe. High cadence riding has been shown to cause vibrations in your frame that can reduce its resistance to bullets. The only way to be sure is to run the test multiple times in different gear combinations.

I plan to conduct this test riding through the near South and near West suburbs of Chicago. Do you think this is a good location?

I've replaced average speed?! Huzzah!

I'm really not sure on what, specifically, I want out of the trainer sessions for the remainder of the winter. Obviously, I can get stronger both aerobically and anaerobically, but I don't feel like my short- and long-term numbers are horrible at an absolute level... but being 90kg, doesn't really help my W/Kg. Maybe I just keep on keepin' on for the next 4-6 weeks - I've avoided the typical (or at least my typical) winter slide thus far, and that's a good start. Then maybe I'll see where I am and decide whether it makes more sense to focus on the W or on the Kg or a little of both.

Fun fact: Paris-Roubaix has started not in Pars but Compiègne since 1977, so the race is nowhere really close to Paris.

But they still call it Paris-Roubaix. I suppose Compiègne-Roubaix does not have the same brand recognition.

What'd ya get? Time occasionally uses Kevlar in the weave, don't they?

I did not do much riding last year so I'm using the next few months to get back my cycling fitness that was lost in 2016.

The Minnesota Duathlon swag is all labeled Minneapolis Duathlon and it actually takes place in Rosemount, Minnesota which is really not close to Minneapolis at all.

That's because the MN Duathlon people know that Minneapolis is really the only place in MN that matters.

The Dakar Rally is no where near Dakar.

I don't really target anything out of trainer time other than not getting fat. That really applies to all my riding, inside and outside. It just so happens that the imaginary numbers in Zwift make for some motivation to prove to myself that I'm not getting gradually slower with age. I'm not disciplined enough or concerned enough about my mid-pack status to really commit to a training/diet regime to get a lot faster IRL.

I was thinking of the same example. Ironically, it used to be the Paris-Dakar rally and didn't even start in Paris, just somewhere in southern France for a few stages before moving across the Med. Obviously it's not even on the African continent now, though I'd argue the backdrop is even more impressive in South America.
