Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Front Der. Q - clamp or braze w/adapter????

Never had a bike without a frame braze-on before.

So the question is what are the cool guys using...

Clamp around deraileur or a braze-on deraileur with an adapter?

This isn't a cost question or a versatility question. Strictly one of function/fashion.

Thanks,

-Z

Buy the frame that you like and fits best. The cool dudes aren't going to let a nerd in on their dirty little secret anyway.

Oh Sid, you're such a d!ck, but I think I am really starting to like you anyway. Either way, you missed the question.

You see, I already have a frame without a braze-on and am using an adapter. But I need a new front der. so I have the option of braze-on with adapter or straight clamp. I have seen lots of nice bikes locally both ways.

On a side note... nerd? You've got to be kidding. Come on out of the '70's.

GO for what you think looks best.

Myself, I prefer clamp-on over using adaptors....to me an adaptor is just one more part that could screw up.

With a clamp you can easily switch between standard double, compact and triple
Braze-on mech mounts have been known to weaken high-end steel tubes and become the starting point for a crack.

And you can't do that with a braze on? Clamps in the hands of hacks have hosed many a fragile seattube.

At least as far as the bike tubing is concerned, I always thought that a braze-on with a clamp adapter was equivalent to a clamp-on. Am I missing something?

Oh, and FWIW if you get the braze-on with an adapter you will have more options should you choose to switch the derailleur to another bike (one with different sized tubing or a braze-on mount). Probably not a big consideration, but if there is nothing else to go by ...

Ya, sometimes the clamp will come in more sizes than the derailleurs (that's more economical for the manufacturer) so the choice will be made for you. My current CF bike had a downtube size that didn't match the Dura-Ace options so the bike came with a Shimano clamp and braze-on derailleur.
