Sorry guys. For more detail I will be in Nice, close to the center of town for the first 5 months then up to Paris.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I would be buying there to save costs then selling before coming home. Since the case + air fees both ways would be $500.. so as long as I can get out of the used bike for less than that I would consider it worth it.
I'll check the sites listed! And anymore comments are appreciated!
Also, yes I can handle myself in city traffic
And oui, je parle un peu Français.

The main dilemma is the cost and if it's worth it. From what I've read Delta charges $150 to fly a bike. So flying it there and back will be $300 plus the $200 of purchasing the case. So a total of $500. I've found a Canyon Ultimate AL 105 for €1300 in Nice, so as long as I resell it for at least €900 I'll save money.
I just can't decide if reselling will be a pain or not. Or if anyone else had any resources or experience buying and selling used bikes in France. Leboncoin.fr has been a good place to look, just not a lot of 58's around.
Thanks for all the replys guys. I appreciate it.

It varies by airline.
Air Canada is less, United is more.
Lots of the Junior teams do resell their stuff. I do not have any Nice connections but many of the Tier 2 race teams buy their bikes cheap so they can resell them at the end of the year.

I'm flying over with my family, my wife and two children. No moving company, we're renting a furnished apartment and we will be there until December. My employer is allowing me to work from anywhere so I'll be flying over a computer as well as 1-2 suitcases per person. We'll be packing fairly light.

As for topless on the beach, I did are careful study with sunglasses on, careful cuz my wife was with me. The math is - 1 in 10 women are topless and 9 out of 10 of those would look better not topless.
The beach itself is all stones, so take towels for padding.

Sounds like an incredible trip OP. I lived in Europe for a year as child - too young to realize the opportunity that it was. I still have great memories of it though. If I were going there now I'm not sure what I'd do about riding - prolly buy something there, honestly.

Second hand bikes are a lot cheaper in Europe, buy it there.
Source: I am Belgian, born and raised, currently living in the US. The second hand market in the US is crazy expensive. People expect to get 70% of new value for a 5 years old bike.
Also the hassle of traveling with a bike on a plane is just not worth it. You will pay a lot of money for it ($200+ dollars on most airlines), and the risk of the bike getting damaged is real.

I keep a bike in Italy where I have a second home.
Performance road bikes are more expensive in Europe and the selection at retail is more limited. However, transporting a bike from the U.S. to Europe is expensive and has risks. The two factors offset each other.
I'd search U.K. sellers, such as Planet X and Wiggle and search for a bike. If you find a model you want, you can order online after you arrive. They will ship to you promptly.

Another place that resells bikes after a season or two are local bike tour companies, of which there are going to be several in that area, e.g. around St. Maxime / St. Tropez, but they're everywhere really. You could do well on a 1-2 yr old bike that's not been abused or crashed, just inspect it carefully first.
