Using Strava Premium with Power Meter

I have a Stages power meter and I'm saving up for a fancy Garmin. In the mean time, I'm wanting to use my Galaxy S7 as a head unit for displaying current power, cadence, etc.. I have a few basic questions...

1. Can Strava display current power figures in real time like a normal head unit?

2. Is it possible to change the power averaging? (1 sec, 3 sec, 20 sec, etc..)

3. Do I have a choice between using Bluetooth protocol and ant+? I hear ant+ has less dropouts. My phone is ant+ capable.

Is there any reason you can't just download the app and try this out yourself? It's free.

Just looking at the app on my ipod it seems like it will connect to power meters, hrm, cadence and speed senors as well as footpods so I assume it will display those things. The app also gives you the choice of using either bluetooth or ant+. I can't tell you about power averaging as I never use the app to record.

I believe I need strava premium for real time power figures. Admittedly I haven't tried it yet, been using my power tap Joule this whole time on my other bike. Just bought the stages for my new bike...

I would test it out, but have no bike mount for my S7. I would rather get an idea of the experience first before shelling out $50 for a good mount..

You can have real time data on the phone using the Stages Connect app.
Set up right, it will also download the ride to Strava when finished.

I have an Edge 520 and used Strava Premium for a while but found I get much better use out of Golden Cheetah for analyzing my Stages ride data.

Save the $50 for the mount and use it towards the Garmin.

hmm, I didn't really answer any of your questions...he he Sorry

I've been known to cycle with plenty of gadgets but it seems I am falling behind with all this new tech stuff! :D

I agree about Golden Cheetah, and if you can use the Stages app to record your power and send it to Strava/etc, and also view it in real time while you ride, that's the right answer.

I think you are right. The Strava website itself says that you need premium for "Speed, cadence, heart rate, and power will now show real-time values instead of averages."

I just tested on normal Strava and the app on android only shows the average power and cadence which is next to useless really isn't it?

Sorry can't help anymore than that. I used to have premium but let it lapse as I really didn't find any use for it and I use a Garmin 500 to record my rides. I've only ever tried using the app once to record a ride just to see if it worked. Unfortunately, the app crashed.

As others have said, you might be better off saving your money on the mount and premium subscription and putting it towards a Garmin 520 or one of the other budget GPS head units (Lezyne's look nice). Or try out one of the other free cycling apps to see if they will work better.

EDIT:

Here is a link from my Strava page which is currently offering a free trial of premium. I'm not sure if it will work for you or not but worth a try?

It will show it - just, I haven't been able to get it to, with my sony Z3 .......

Strava on Android ANT+ sensor functionality isn't real flash - in my experience.

cheers
