Are side pull brakes obsolete?

Once at the cutting edge of technology, have they been put out to pasture?

Or will the new popularity of "do it all" bikes with wider rims and the capacity for fatter tires bring them back to the fore?

Will their ease of maintenance and elegant simplicity appeal to mechanical things averse Generation Z?

No, my "side pull" Record brakes will still throw me over the bars if I get on them too aggressively. I do think that for carbon rims, disks are not a bad idea, however aesthetically i hate the look.

It is about time we started discussing this.

They are still a heck of a lot better than the crap brakes that come on cheap bikes sold today. My Motobecane Le Champion, which was top of the line in the early 1970s, had side pull brakes which never let me down in three decades of riding the bike.

Yeah, they are obsolete because they sucked!:D

Doge 02-06-17 07:14 PM

Single Pivot - Yes.
Dual Pivot - No. Still the state of the art stopping system in road brakes.

I thought it was the Tri-cycle Commission.

I like single pivots as rear brakes. If your rim goes out of true they can follow it pretty well for consistent braking rather than the thump-thump-thumping you will get with dual pivots. I can trim speed just as well but it takes a bit more pull on the lever to lock up the wheel. Campagnolo still offers brakesets in the dual-front/single-rear configuration.

Dave Cutter 02-07-17 10:24 PM

By definition... apparently not. Lots of bikes still being made and sold with side-pull brakes. But disc brakes sure are cool.

Nope, that market is completely covered by disc brakes which can take even fatter tires and have better braking performance.

Nope, only for the period correct C&V crowd. Everyone else will use discs or dual-pivot, both of which are better.
