Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Parts Sourcing Help - Wheel Bearings

I have a set of spinergy PBO stealth wheels on my felt. There is some play in the rear wheel as I understand the way to fix that is new bearings.

Is that correct?

I've just stripped down the rear hub and it seems ok. Cleaned, packed, assembled and tuned but there is still some play.

I don't have the tool to remove the catridges and I've only ever used loose bearings before.

Does anyone know the size so I can order a pair.

Thank you in advance!

Their website shows a diagram of the hubs, and includes the bearing size needed. You could also contact them to confirm the accuracy of the information listed.

You can also just pop out the cartridges, take them to a shop, and ask them to order you a new set. Even with the shop markup it'll still be cheap unless it's some impossible-to-source custom size.

Yeah the part number is 6902 I have since ordered them from a website but they still seem different. We shall see!

There seems to be a 2 after the 2 but dimensions are the same

Do you see any reason why these wouldn't fit?

Couldn't tell you one way or another. I had a couple of headset bearing cartridges that I ordered replacements for on 3 separate occasions and each time they were slightly off (ACB bearings with an angled edge), so I got frustrated and had my shop find the right ones for me for maybe $10 more than what I was trying to pay on ebay. If what you ordered doesn't fit, take the originals in.

I've been through this with headset bearings, too. There are no 'standards' for chamfered edge bearings. They aren't really used anywhere aside from bikes, and only really for headsets (and Campy cranksets). I had to search high and low for a vendor who could actually quote what their chamfer dimension was, and luckily the bearings provided actually matched that dimension. Most vendors I talked to could not tell me what their chamfer dimension was. Really?!

However, wheel bearings being straight cartridges should be far less complicated. One only needs to find the correct outer and inner diameters and thickness then the seal type.

The '2' after the 6902 is part of the '2RS' designation which means 'two rubber seals.'

IIRC the two common angles are 30 and 45°. I only use Cane Creek headsets and can always buy the replacements specifically for that brand. You just search Cane Creek 1 1/8" or whatever diameter you need and the quality series level you want on ebay, and the correct replacement pops right up. One 40 series example right now is $8.95. That's not bad. I'm pretty sure you can do the same thing on Amazon. Actually the Cane Creek bearings probably work for most other brands, but don't quote me on that.

The angles are 36 and 45 and some bearings are 36/45 and others 45/45. The biggest issue that you seem to have avoided but which Dan and I have both experienced is that the depth of that chamfer dimension isn't (usually) specified when you buy bearings. If the dimension is different from what you previously had you will either have a headset that now has a larger gap between the top cap and the frame (chamfer too small) or the top cap will contact the frame (chamfer too big).

Of course this all irrelevent to the OP who is looking for a standard cartridge bearing.

If cartridge bearings have play, they should also be obviously rough- trashed.

Look for side play adjustment on the hub.

For bearings, I've been happy with VXB

Thanks for the correction. Point is, if you stick with standard headset brands and models, you can get the proper branded replacements with little effort. Why worry about finding the right generic bearing when you can find the right specific one more easily.

I have some Fulcrum 5 hubs, and had at least 2mm side-to-side play at the rim on the rear. The bearings themselves are smooth-rolling and there is no provision for adjustment. I installed new bearings (no name) which fixed the play, but I'm not happy with the resistance to rolling.

In my case, I was looking for 100 sets of bearings (200 pcs.) for a project, so not looking to pay retail prices.

As you well know, not many combacks will shut me up, but that one did it.
