Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM Front derail doesn't 'fire'

My etap front derail has stopped working. It is synced, and when both levers are pushed the green light comes on, on the front d, but there is no sound, and the derail does not move. I have resynced, all green lights, rear derail works fine, swapped batteries, front derail shows green light. It just doesn't move.

Have you called the place you bought it from? Is it still under warranty?

If a guy were a jerk, he might be tempted to say that nothing's wrong with the fd and that this is just part of the SRAM front derailleur tradition. But if a guy wanted to be helpful? I would take it back to the LBS and get a diagnosis/replacement.

My SRAM fd functions perfectly . . . but then, it's a Force1.

Thanks for the laugh this morning FWIW, my Red22 FDs are smooth as butter! Pre-22? Not so much.

You're not the first to sing the praises of the Red22 fd. Unfortunately, judging from this and a couple other forums, etap appears to have gone back to the tradition of the other SRAM front derailleurs.

It's a truism that you shouldn't buy a car in its intro year or the year after. Same with any intro of Microsoft software. They seem to use their customers as their second-stage debuggers. The same has been true of SRAM products for quite some time. I have no doubt SRAM will iron out the bugs in etap (or, more accurately, the customers will), but it will take some time.

Sheesh, all the SRAM hate!

Their FD's are very tricky to get set up correctly, but once it's right... fantastico supremo.

A SRAM front derailleur that doesn't work properly? This can't be true.

So no one else has this problem and I'm the only one. I should have spent my money on comedy classes unlike these other guys.

I know of 2 frequent posters that own eTap. If one of them had the same problem you have, that would be a very high failure rate, even by SRAM standards.

What did your shop say about it?

Shop called SRAM who said hang on and we'll get back to you, that was 2 weeks ago. Meanwhile I'm riding on the small ring, no biggie but come on.

Or . . . dare we say . . . a manufacturer that thinks a non-functional front derailleur is unusual? Or a problem? Or something worthy of a quicker response? (If it were summer, you would maybe expect to hear the "we're busy" excuse, but in February/early March?)

I'm not a fan of SRAM, but their customer service is top notch. I doubt that SRAM is the one causing the delay.

Your experience apparently could not be more different than mine. My experiences with SRAM customer service have not been rude or gruff, just apathetic and inept. They didn't seem to care.

SRAM customer service is for dealers only, so that might be the problem.

Granted, I was standing across the counter while my LBS owner was talking on the phone across the counter from me. I wasn't talking with them myself. But the impression, from my end, was that of someone having to pull teeth to get any kind of response.

But it's one person's experience. Completely anecdotal. Maybe SRAM's person was having a couple of bad weeks. Or maybe he and my LBS owner don't get along. Who knows? Even good customer service departments can occasionally provide a bad experience.

Agreed. In fact the Yaw setups I have used to fix un-fixable shifting issues on Shimano setups.

I would say 9 out of 10 front derails that come across my stand are set up incorrectly when they get there. It isn't hard but it takes a good eye to get them set and sometimes I think they end up moving slightly in the frame under pressure and use.

Sorry about the e-Tap. Have fun with that.

AHAHAHA, even with their latest greatest, most advanced electronic, they can't get the FD to work!

Sorry, but this running joke with SRAM and FD is too funny that it affects their eTap too.

No help from me, don't mean to troll but this was just funny to read.
