Pedal Extender Questions

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedal Extender Questions

I ride a Ridley Force 22 and I rode with shoe covers on and wore a hole rubbing against the crank. I took off the shoe covers, and notice my shoe was still rubbing on my crank. I've adjusted my clete every which way I can and I still get a rub. I'm using Ultegra SPD-SL pedals. I wear a size 48 Fizik R5B Uomo Road Shoe

I'm thinking about purchasing
Extenders

Here are my questions, 1. Will pedal extenders screw up my fit? 2. Will pedal extenders make my carbon cranks assplode? 3. Is there any other option to quit my shoe from rubbing against my crank?

Will 4mm of extra clearance do it? If so, then buy these: Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL 6800 4mm Road Pedals | Chain Reaction Cycles

Are you sure you sliding your cleat all the way toward your big toe to maximize crank clearance? If you aren't try that, too, possibly combined with those +4mm pedals. I would hesitate to add as much moment arm at the pedal interface as those extenders add. Some crank manufacturers specifically say 'NO' to them.

I could try a couple of 1 mm washers instead of the 20mm pedal extenders. I'm not having the problem on the right pedal, but I'm thinking I should also add a couple of washers on that right side just to be even.

You might want to look into what SRAM has to say about using extenders on a carbon fiber crankarm, everything I've seen says don't do it.

I'm only familiar with speedplay, where you can find OEM and after-market spindles of various lengths, but don't other pedal making brands offer different length spindles?

Those will work but 20-22 mm may be quite a bit for you. Try them. I used Speedplay Zeros and use either those ones you reference or (recently) am trying 12mm longer spindles.

Put some helicopter tape (or clear gorilla tape) on the crank arms.

I've got a pair of the Bike Fit 20mm pedal extenders that I don't use. Send me your address and I'll mail them to you.

if you don't notice the rubbing while riding then i wouldnt compromise your fit to save wear. Put some 3m tape on the arm and replace periodically. Almost all my crankarms have foot rub

I'm thinking about purchasing THESE PEDAL Extenders

1. it may change your pedal stroke. something has give, whether its the ankle or the the knee or your shoe may pop out occasionally wit the speed plays. I shattered both leg bones where they meet at the knee and required extension to ride.

2. I use carbon crank with extenders and no issues.

3. idk

2.
