Cheap (rear) wheel for trainer?
I am in the market for a trainer wheel.
Any recommendation? Nashbar? |
I've been using last years tires. Only had 2,500 miles on them, just rotate those out. So far have about 950 on a used tire. Get some new freshies for the actual road every spring!
Works great. |
If I buy a dedicated trainer wheel, I generally look for sales online. I've bought new Mavic Aksium rear wheels for $99 and less.
|
I am using old tires too. but I meant the wheel itself :)
|
Ask your friends for an old used wheel that they no longer use. Worn out rims may be unsafe for road riding, but OK on a trainer. Mount worn out old tires on it as well.
|
Perhaps this is an opportunity to upgrade your primary wheel and use your current wheel as the trainer wheel? More money? Yes. But, hey.

I just bought this set for a CX/gravel/fireroad/commuter. Not the lightest wheelset, but looks well built. 8-9-10 speed only, unfortunately. |
Buy a really good new rear wheel and put old one on trainer!
|
Unfortunately for me I have had several rear wheels develope cracks around the spoke holes. I retired them from road duty and realized they make the perfect trainer tires - the wheel is not supporting the weight of me and the bike and if it fails, no biggie!
I know this does not answer your question unless you have a wheel similar to mine laying around. Good luck |
