Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt. How did I not hear this was coming?!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a question that I hope someone can answer, and hasn't answered already in the last six pages, which I have only skimmed.

If I understood the reviews, you pair your Bolt with a smart phone via a QR code. The camera on my phone is currently not working. I will replace the phone eventually, but for the time being, is it possible to pair the Bolt without using the camera, by entering a code by hand, or some such? I'm very interested in the Bolt, but if it requires the camera on your to work, it'll have to wait.

You will need to contact Wahoo on that since it is not covered in their FAQ. There is a chat with support feature on their website.

Also, it says that it's Ant+ compatible. I have a Garmin speed, cadence, and heart rate monitor, and another bike has the old combined speed/cadence monitor. Is the Bolt compatible with those? I hope I don't have to buy them again.

It's been a fairly long time since Garmin sold a sensor that wasn't Ant+. How are you using them now?

Yes, the ELEMNT can use Garmin ANT+ sensors no problem.

My Cateye speed/cadence sensor and heart rate strap are ANT+ and the Bolt paired with them both without an issue.

Can anyone validate the 15 hour battery life claim?

DC Rainmaker's and Clever Training's review of the unit both projected greater than 15hrs runtime (https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/wahoo-elemnt-bolt-in-depth-review.html, A First Look at the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt | Clever Training Blog). DC Rainmaker seems to have had his linked to his phone at the time since it could live track other Wahoo Elemnt users near him, was running GPS and linked sensors, probably LEDs too, so this would represent a higher battery drain situation and quite frankly the situation most of us would use.

Wahoo support mentions 17hrs if the backlight is used sparingly.

I did a 10 hour ride on the original ELEMENT, which is rated at 16 hours, and it had 25% battery left.

Based on that, I'd say 16 hours for the ELEMNT is probably best case scenario, but it's in the right ballpark. For the record I did not use backlight on that ride, but I did have ANT+ HR, speed and power meters on my bike, and I used the maps page probably on a few occasions (which is known to drain the battery quicker).

That fits with my experience as well.

I use mine on the commute to and from work. I wanted to see how long it would last so I kept using it without charging. Mine went 13 hours and 32 minutes. However, that was over 10 days of riding with multiple shutdowns and startups. I connect it to a HR strap, speed sensor and a power meter all on Bluetooth.

And, in fact, I am using my Elemnt with Garmin speed and cadence sensors.

Thanks for the feedback on the battery life. In fact, you've convinced me to buy one. Can't wait to receive it and try it out.

A couple rides in and I'm happy. Easy to set up, phone app for screen config works well. Text alert is a nice feature for a single Dad. Very easy to read display even in the Texas sun. Still tinkering with what I display and in what order. Really like the wifi upload.

So far no issues with the SRM on my Cdale.

Picked up a very nice TT mount from Kedge. The Bolt paired up with the Power2Max on the TT bike, have not ridden it yet.

I'm trying to decide on a bike computer to get. Are you able to navigate to a destination on the Bolt without preloading a course on to it? I want something that can function similar to Google Maps on days that I want to wander off a trail and bike to another one. In the end, I'll probably end up getting the Bolt or a Fenix 3.

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/...th-review.html

He has a Mapping and Navigation section that I believe covers what you are asking. Seems like Wahoo updates their software pretty often and in major ways so reviews that are more than a month are two old are all ready out dated. Nice but also hard to keep up with.

I got my bolt yesterday. You can use the companion app on your phone to enter in a new route destination while you are on the road. The interface is very similar to google maps in the operation. I am looking forward to using this feature. My short term impression is really positive. The contrast makes this much more readable in bright sunlight than my Garmin 520.

It works exactly like google maps. You essentially drop a pin in the smartphone app, a route is calculated and immediately downloaded into the unit. Super easy.

Dropping a pin can be done multiple ways - address, touch to drop a pin, back to start, search Similar to googl etc.. nothing close to similar on Garmin nor as easy to use.

Anyone have an example/screenshot of the display for cadence? I'm currently running the Garmin Edge 25 + cadence sensor and thinking about upgrading to this instead.

There's nothing to show. Cadence can be in any position and can be as large as half the screen to as small as one of the 11 (Elemnt) or 9 (Bolt) fields. You control that in the setup by establishing the display priority.

FWIW, the size of the text in the Bolt or Elemnt at the smallest font size is just about the same.

Is it me or does the Bolt bring up thoughts of the old Cateye Solar. (The profile and size are similar)

Maybe there's a hack where you can make it display this:
