Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does anyone know of any Smartwatches / Fitness trackers that will communicate with the Bolt for HRM purposes?

I believe the Mio HRMs, like the Link, are worth looking at.

Like my Scosche Rhythm, the Mio Link is just an HRM as far as I can see. I was hoping to get either a Smartwatch (like a Samsung Gear S3) or a Fitness / Activity Tracker (like a Fitbit) and use the HRM capabilities on them with my Bolt.

The MIO Slice on the other hand may do what I want. It's a full fitness tracker that also features ANT+ / BT 4.0 LTE. But not sure if that's just for syncing with your phone or if it'll also sync with a cycling computer.

https://www.mioglobal.com/en-us/comp...ty/default.htm - According to this the Slice is not compatible with cycling computers but the Fuse is. I suppose the list may simply not be updated.

Ah, I see. Sorry, but I don't have any insight into the connectivity issue; I had thought they would, but not sure. Maybe check DC Rainmaker site for reviews of Mio; if he tested teh Slice, he'll have a comment on connectivity to cyclocomputers.

My mio link works for pulse rate, but my gear Fit2 doesn't communicate to the bolt. I tried to find a work around to get pulse rate to Strava with the ride data, but no luck with the fitness watch.

I tried using my Samsung Gear S2 but decided to get the Bolt bundle. I sweat a lot and wanted to keep the S2 in good shape. I almost ordered a Garmin watch but ordered the Bolt computer but returned it and ordered the bundle. I bought it at Performance Bicycle and joined the team performance for $30. I think I get $30+ back so that's a wash and will get future discounts. Not sure why it's not linking to my account since it's been 4 days though. The good thing about Performance is you can return it up to 1yr. Hopefully the bolt comes this week since it's nice weather. I talked to the Performance employee a day later and he said a customer came in a hr after I left and bought the Bolt computer I returned.

I recently picked up an Element Bolt. I love it – super easy to set up custom screens. I didn’t want color, as (for me) black-n-white is the easiest to read a quick glance. As my cycling glasses are not bi-focal, I especially like that I can actually read the numbers now, which are larger than my old Garmin. The mapping isn’t as exact as a smart phone, but all I need is something to get me back to my car when dropped on an unfamiliar ride. A great bit of versatility in a small form factor.
Aero – they Bolt integrates almost seamlessly into the custom front mount. It’s a perfect fit on my aero racing rig.
Overall, I’m impressed with the Wahoo platform, having migrated to the ‘Ticker’ HR monitor, the speed sensor, and the KICKR trainer. Plus my LBS carried this, so that was a bonus.

Most of the smart watches are an endpoint for an HRM, they don't broadcast as an HRM. For example, my Apple Warch can accept and pair with an HRM but it can't broadcast to a bike computer. In essence, it is the computer. Generally though you can set up a workout and it will keep track of that.

I had a weird episode today where my iPhone Wahoo app would not initiate the Settings page for my Bolt; it just kept showing "connecting". Oddly, it did show the Bolt ID and details on the Connecting screen, and gave the option to unpair, but never entered Settings. Also, it showed the Bolt as connected if I tapped on the Bolt ID on the Connecting screen. Bolt did not show up in the Iphone bluetooth menu.

I restarted both the Bolt and the app and the iPhone BT to no avail. All sensors connected to Bolt properly, so I made my ride. At the conclusion, I ended the ride on Bolt and it uploaded to Strava automatically and properly, although it did not indicate as much.

I guess I will try plugging Bolt into computer to look for updates, but I feel that should happen over the air via the app, or do I have the wrong concept here

I had a similar problem. My Elemnt would connect but then it would unconnected and the cycle through the whole thing again while my phone and the Elemnt were sitting side by side on the table. The fix is to reset the iPhone's network settings which means you lose your vpn setups and wifi passwords. That was a little drastic, but it worked. Heaven knows what a bluetooth connection to a peripheral has to do with corrupting the overall networking stack but.....

Your Bolt will upload to Strava over wifi all by itself. Doesn't need your phone for that but it can do it that way too.

This stuff is starting to get complicated. We've now got a little (maybe not so little) personal network going on while you're riding your bike down the road.

Right on the wifi upload; I'd forgotten about that.

In my case, the Bolt was connected to the phone (as shown in the Wahoo app), but the iP7 did not show a BT connection to it, so the connection "channel" was inop.

Fix was to delete the Bolt profile in the app, "forget phone" on the Bolt, and re-pair.

It was almost certainly due to the fact I replaced my iP6 with a new iP7...a major piece of the puzzle which I forgot to consider and mention in my earlier post! Whoops!

That's one of the things I like about the Elemnt/Bolt connectivity - seems to be equally at home over either channel (wifi or BT) and I like how it's agnostic about uploading to cloud services. Mine goes to 3 - Strava, Dropbox and RidewithGPS. From there, I'm using Tapiirik in the cloud to sync with Garmin connect. Garmin, in an apparent snit, pulled the API from wahoo. Fortunately, there are other ways around that.

One of my main reasons for moving from Garmin to Wahoo was the close integration with Strava and RideWithGPS routes. When my wife and I ride together, it's just a real pain to move routes back and forth. With this, I share routes under ridewithgps with her and she syncs via wifi and it's done. Super simple.

I've not had a lot of luck with BT pairings surviving over phone changes. That had to be what the problem was. Glad you got it working. That network reset fix I had to do was ugly.

New Firmware/APP update released today. Wahoo said it would address my drop outs in altitude data collection that I experienced at higher altitudes (8000 feet)
Release notes are not available yet.

yes the lack of color is the BETTER OPTION. I have the Cyclo 505 and also previously used a Garmin Oregon 600 and the color screens were very very very difficult to read in reality on the bike - these color screens are very dull looking in the outdoors and can be difficult to navigate when you're going fast down hill. All you need is a black/white super clear screen. Anyone who still wants a color screen has not used one in reality to know how much better a simpler black and white map looks.

You'll have difficulity knowing the difference between a cyan colored highway versus your pink highlighted route when you're going 35km downhill and need to decide fast to turn left or continue straight on while avoiding to hit cars and stay upright on the bike!!!!!

I have the bolt and really dig it. However, I'm having option fatigue when setting up the screens. I'm constantly second guessing what to put on the home screen. I don't mind having and occasional duplicate field, but I don't want to add too many more pages because it's a pain to scroll through while riding.

I'd love to hear people's use case WRT screens and data fields.

Cheers!

Yeah, it's easy to go nuts.

My top field is speed, then it's 3 second power average followed by cadence and then di2 gear selection. Those are what are on my display the most (4 fields). When I zoom out, I get distance, lap distance, time and grade added progressively. I wear an HRM but I consign that to the LEDs since that tells me everything I want to know about heat rate when I'm riding. If I don't use the HRM, then the LEDs are off and I don't have the distraction of a field with N/A in it. When I'm riding, I care about my power output (that's how I know if I'm dogging it) and my cadence mostly.

What I wish Wahoo had done is to have the fields disappear if the sensor is not there. So if I'm on my bike that doesn't have a power meter, then the power fields would just go away. That would allow me to have less pages. Otherwise, I have a different main page for each of the two bikes I tend to ride the most.

I just use the default display options. Like you, I have a hard time deciding what to change.
