My first case of road rash!
Ok...so conditions weren't optimum to begin with, but we had planned this ride for weeks and we were all looking forward to it. So we weren't about to let a torrenial downpour spoil our ride. We waited in the van until it let up a bit, but it was still raining when we took off. I was soaked in a matter of minutes. No big deal, just rain. Before we could get to the paved trails we had to take some dirt ones that were well, muddy. That's not easy, a road bike on a muddy trail...not fun. Anyway, so when we get to the paved trails we cross over a set of rail road tracks and my tire gets stuck in the rut and I went down hard and fast. I was going about 15 mph and I slid a good couple of feet. Surprisingly enough it didn't hurt right away. Hurts like a MF now!! My bike got jolted a bit and my friend tinkered with it a bit to get the brakes to quit rubbing and it seemed fine enough. We kept riding. Then on the way back going under a bridge it's a steep decent, short but steep and I hit it going too fast and my back tire slid in a puddle of water because I leaned too far I guess. And I went down hard again!! Same side too. Torked my knee this time because my foot didn't clip out until the last second, I was already down. Well...my bike slides away from me and UNDER the rail. The rail that is supposed to keep people from falling in the RIVER!! I see my bike going under the rail and I grab the back tire with my fingers between the spokes and yank it back up on the trail. In true "Indiania Jones" fashion (the scene where he rescues his hat). I saved my bike!! It wouldn't have slid that far but I was on a decline so it had some gravitational assistance. All in all it was an awesome ride. Since the trails were mostly flat I was able to work on speed and I averaged about 18 mph (which for me is booking!!). My first crash...got some serious road rash and a kick a$$ story out of the deal.

I am sorry to hear about your injury but at least it isn't a broken bone or ligament. I carry some povidone antiseptic wipes with me now. I found that when you first crash there is a shock effect or the nerve endings are on strike or whatever, but I can get the wound cleaned out right away without so much screaming. Later, as you note, it hurts like all get out....Best wishes!!

That blows... The rut was my first case of the rash too, going downhill, and all I remeber was thinking it was going to be bad and saying oh S**T... Hope you get well soon.. Btw that Indiana Jones stuff was pretty cool
... I wonder if I would have my wits about to do something like that...

You probably hit a manhole cover the 2nd time or some metal. When it's wet, it might as well be ice.
I had my first wreck on my first road bike that way. I was going home after a rain storm and took a corner at like 20mph, next thing I know, I'm on the ground and my bike's bouncing along in front of me, we must've slid about 60 ft, it didn't hurt and there wasn't much road rash since the asphalt was wet. It felt like I was on a slip and slide.

Sorry to hear about your accident.
Use non stick pads and keep lots of Neosporine on them for longer than you might think you need. Use hydrogen peroxide on it daily when you can. Keep the wounds moist and clean. Being a motorcyclist, skater, biker - and parent - I've learned much about road rash.
Remember pain is only weakness leaving your body.
Feel better soon.

You're in Arlington, right? Me too. Today was not a good day to ride. I swore off two wheeling on wet pavement when I went down hard on my motorcycle in the rain. Ouch!
Stay dry.. get well.. in the mean time, have your every need catered to by your hubby.

Wow, what a terrifying adventure! I'm glad you weren't more seriously injured but sorry that you will be in pain for awhile. It will make a great story to tell people for many years to come though!

I'm glad it wasn't any worse. At least you got a good stry to tell out of it. It's always a good sign that a cyclist isn't hurt too badly in a crash when their first question is, "How's my bike???" Get well quickly.

Use a nonstick pad like this
. It's a lot less painful to take off. I had a cheap pad once and the skin healed onto the pad. When I ripped the pad off, it ripped the new skin off along with it, felt like I was skinning myself alive, literally.
