Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's the link to the relatively simple version of the half pipe test for determining cda for a rider on the bike?

Allen and Cogan discuss it but not in detail.

Why not get a recumbent? It solves all of the pain problems a road bike creates and vastly increases efficiency. I dethroned a cat1 rider in Niles canyon in the East bay area using a bent.

Climbing is painful and descents are enjoyable so I prefer minimizing the time spent on the former and stretching out the time spent on the latter rather than the other way 'round.

Cause it is not a "bike". There is something about a UCI (except the weight part) mass start legal bike that makes it the hobby. But no question, that can be faster. It is just who is faster in the constraints we mostly accept that makes it interesting. I have no interest in what a HPV can do.
I feel the same about America's Cup boats that went from 12m in similar to what Connors won with, to these nut-job wind powered hydro-planes. They completely bore me. I used to know the names of crew members, now I hardly know a team name.
Want to go fast - get a motor.

I don't have a philosophical or ideological position that says they're not bikes.

Are you wondering if they are road bikes?

To me it is a very clear and they are a different thing. They even have their own sub-forum. Why would what a recumbent discussion be any different than one about a motorcycle, or running? They are all very different.
The latter two are just not road cycling bikes.

I think people ride them on the road. I also think MTBs, and CXs, and folding bikes, and 700c hybrid commuters, and beach cruisers are bikes that no one would road race but that people do use to ride on the road.

There's a racing forum, too, but we occasionally discuss racing here.

Reggieray made a little comment about riding a recumbent. It was pretty innocuous. I don't think it's worth getting into a purity argument about what makes a bike kosher and what makes it trayf.

Racers are riding the same bikes. These sub forums are divided by equipment.
It is not a purity argument, it is a category classification. It is not a road bike, and has no more place being discussed here than my kid's rowing.
A bit of tolerance is fine for any subject, but when bringing up Strava and performance that is more than a public interest story. It is off topic.
