Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We need a photo-posting week. Photos of self.

That should be fun.

That hill between Missoula and Wallace is a doozy in a car. Never tried biking it.

You gonna spend the night in Wallace? They used to have a few nice brothels there

Not as bad as it might look. 13 days of riding with one rest day. Maybe two if I combine two relatively short days. And that largest climb is an "out and back" up to Logan Pass in Glacier National Park. Since I will be camping there two nights I will only be carrying foul weather gear and plenty of snacks for the climb.

When I climbed it for the third time in my life '09, the GF and I didn't bring enough food. We were starving on the way back down. We had to stop for a while on the descent due to road work. A member of the road crew was nice enough to go into her lunch pail and give us a small granola bar. It was so small it didn't help much, but it was a wonderful gesture.

The spike east of Wallace up to Lookout Pass is on the NorPac rail-trail. Ruling grade is not much over 2%, but it is unpaved.

I do plan to camp in Wallace. There is an RV Park that allows tent camping. It's literally right next to a brew pub/restaurant. What sort of trouble could I possibly get into with that arrangement?

The next day I do those three spikes. The second one is 3 miles up of dirt, with grades in the last mile between 7% and 10%. Then 9 miles up to Thompson Pass back into MT. Total day is about 55 miles with only I restaurant along the way, and it will probably not be open at the time I pass by.

This reminds me.... Back in '72, three of us were hiking out of Mt. lassen? Somewhere up there. We had a ten mile hike, with three oranges among us. We survived the hike, and still managed to hitch into Berkley for a Dead concert. The venue was so full of smoke you couldn't see through it.

Y'all occasionally have songs playing internally as you ride, right? Today was "My Prerogative." Heard it at the LBS yesterday and it popped back up while pedaling and couldn't shake it. BPM worked for me though, so it could have been worse.

If it involves:

1) Camping
2) Hauling all your stuff
3) Being exposed to Montana weather

then it is as bad as it looks.

My Wednesday fun ride has changed and I don't think I am happy. It has been broken into two, a faster group and a slower group. I know these things are all relative, but to me the slow group is too slow and the fast group is too fast. I rode with the fast group but it was a hard ride. It's not quite as much fun but I suppose change is inevitable. I almost wish we could break into THREE, fast, medium, and slow...but with typically 10-15 riders I am not sure that will work.

All the time. Very often also externally, usually via whistling, although singing occasionally occurs too.
