Do you have "upgraditis"?
 

Just curious who else here has a case of upgraditis? While I no longer have the need to get the latest and greatest everything like I used to, I still like to buy things that I can somewhat justify. My used bike came with perfectly fine used tires with tread life still on them (Schwalbe Lugano) yet I still felt the need to go by some new Conti GP 4000s II's.

Anyone else here buy stuff for your bike even though you don't really "need" it? And the latter part to that question would be, who wants to upgrade the whole bike itself just to try something different? As a kid, I probably had 100 different BMX bikes, with no logical reason why. I always wanted something different and new, just because, even if it wasn't always a logical upgrade. And for some reason, my dad encouraged it. Thankfully I am no longer that way, but still bought $70 worth of tires that weren't really needed.

Yup. Every day I find something I "need". Like replacing the Dura Ace 9070 with 9150 because it's outdated or needing aero gear for crits, or another trainer to do zwift etc etc. Even a mountain bike has crossed my mind.

Not really. The only thing that needs upgrading is the engine.

Ya, I'm tired of all the consumerism. It doesn't make me consistently happy. Performing well does.

I have the opposite ----- OKasitisitis.

In 50+ years I don't think I've ever replaced or upgraded a part that wasn't worn out or broken. The exception would be switching gearing around to make a bike suitable for the purpose. But even there, I don't change it often. Once it's been set the way I want it, I'm done.

Wear it out, replace it.

If you think road bikes are bad for upgraditis..... Mountain bikes are a whole different category...
In addition to the standard road bike stuff, there's all the fork/suspension options, dropper seatposts, 1x gearing options, tire choices..

A great antidote to upgraditis is notenoughmoneyitis.

While I like new, shiny stuff, I can't justify the cost.

I love cycling but have other priorities that prevent me from continually upgrading.

I wish I had more upgraditis. My '83 Miyata 710 is still rocking the old Schwinn-branded tires that were there when I got it a year ago. They're cheapo gumwalls with a raised centerline, they're neither supple nor have a very nice cornering feel, and at 28mm wide they each weight FIVE HUNDRED GRAMS. After a year of use, there's no visible wear and tear. Nor any apparent age-related cracking. I'm waiting for them to die, but it seems like they'll last forever.

The 27" market isn't huge, but I could at least throw some Paselas on there or something.

Yes I have the bug to upgrade. My wheels are a necessity however the gear set is not.
I have the wheels en route. I have the Sora 9 spd and going to upgrade to a 5800/6800 gear set. I have yet to order the new gear set.

No, just replacing and I find it annoying. Next step is finding a helmet, an annoyance.

Yes, like a myna bird, I'm attracted to shiny objects.

I am prevented from purchasing most items in the "want" column by riding an amount of miles that requires me to almost constantly purchase items from the "need" column-- tires, tubes, chains, cassettes, brake pads, etc.

I do like upgrading the wife's bike without telling her, though.

In the beginning I did, upgrading Sora to Tiagra, to 105, to Ultegra, and then DA, and then passing on the group to 'lesser' bikes. Funny thing is that I ride the Tiagra and 105 bikes most often, mainly commuting, and the nicer bikes get little use, except on the weekend, and even that's not often. I suppose I could slap some fenders and a rack on my carbon Roubaix Dura Ace to ride to work.

So the answer is not anymore, though I still browse the classifieds regularly. I've been tempted, but have not given in...yet.

I'm always looking at stuff, but when the time comes I usually go for mid-range items. I've always wanted to build up a bike under 15 lbs, but can't really justify the cost.

For example, I'd love some super light carbon wheels, but I have Ultegra wheels that are reasonably light but very durable and inexpensive. I stick with Al bars and seatposts even though I could shave some grams there. The list goes on.

I used to. not anymore. just going to replace things when they break or wear out. maybe i'll put on a newer/upgraded version of that part but, whatever.

As in taking a working part off and replacing it, wheels are the only upgrades I can recall buying. So I guess not.

Yup. Not so much components as accessories and jerseys, shorts, base layers, socks, and helmets. Just 4 or 5 years ago, I didn't actually own a bike jersey, cycling socks, or cycling athletic sunglasses. I wore whatever shirts and socks I wore to the gym. Base layers? I didn't even know what that was 5 years ago. And as for shorts, I wore the same two pair of shorts for years, and that includes use on the spinning bikes at the gym. As for gloves, I used to wear the same gloves until they literally fell apart. As far as eyewear goes, on sunny days I wore cheap sunglasses I picked up at Walgreens. And I had maybe 2 or 3 water bottles, and again, that includes the one I kept in my gym bag.

Now I have multiples of everything; shoes, short sleeve jerseys, long sleeve jerseys, light weight base layers, thermal base layers, shorts, tights, gloves, helmets, water bottles, eyewear, gloves. Probably the most I have is short sleeve jerseys and socks. It got so bad I gave away a bunch of jerseys and helmets a couple of months ago. If it gets much worse, I might have to get a table at the local bike swap next November. :p

Way back mid 80s when making single digit hourly wage I decided not to ever worry about that.

I was going to add that for me it is less upgrade, but purposed based. So wheels for flats, smooth, dirt, hills - etc.

So far I have rejected fat tire and disc brake bike.

I get upgradeitis all the time. There's always some new toy that entices you into wanting it. The trick is to resist unless there's a reason to do so.. like a significant improvement over current item being upgraded.
There are people who will tell you that upgrading a $900 wheelset to a $2000 wheelset will be 'worth the money' and you'll 'notice the difference immediately'. Or something to that degree.. but, I can assure you that if you're the average rider (which many of us are, let's face it) 95% of the time, it's simply not true. I have 2 sets of shimano road pedals.. One Dura Ace and the other is a SPD SL. Huge difference in price. I, personally, couldn't tell the difference. They make u want the DA pedals and you're made to feel like the SPD SL's aren't that good.. But believe me, unless you race, it doesn't matter.. and even then I'd argue that it're more the person than the parts.
