Shimano D-Fly: Is there a D-Fly in the ointment?
First, let me confess that I'm a bike gadget junkie. I'm not the only one here, but maybe this will forestall the twelve people waiting to add posts criticizing bike gadgets. (Probably not. Luddites don't usually have anything else to do.)
But anyway, I installed Shimano Di2 D-Fly a couple months back. I installed the Ant+ transmitter just to the left and below the stem. It's about 5" away from my Garmin. That was the easiest and most convenient place to install it. You can install the transmitter anywhere in your Di2 system, but the instructions place it near the rear derailleur. To me, that seemed like a dumb placement, but I'm beginning to think that there's method to the odd placement madness.
At some point since the day I installed the D-Fly -- not exactly sure when -- I started having problems with signals dropping out from my Ant+ power meter. I've used the same power meter and same Garmin unit for a couple years without any drop-outs. I use the same Garmin and a different power meter of the same brand on a different bike without any drop-outs. (That bike doesn't have D-Fly.)
What do you think, Bike Forum? Could the D-Fly Ant+ transmitter, because of its location, be interfering with my power meter signal? Maybe I went one gadget too far?

Do (or did) you find that the D-fly significantly increased the rate of Di2 battery drain? (I was thinking of getting one, and then Heisenberg made me uncertain.)

I never noticed a difference. But with Di2 charges only taking place every 3,000 miles or so, I'm not sure I would have noticed a drop off to 2,500 miles, if it occurred.

I don't know if this helps or not, but here goes....I've got the older D-Fly (Ant+ only SM-EWW01) installed in the seat tube under the internal battery but no power meter. Ultegra 6870 Di2. Once the D-Fly connected to my Garmin Edge 510 when I installed it, it was rock-solid until I flashed the Di2 with the latest firmware a couple of weeks ago. Once that happened I could not get the D-Fly to talk to my 510. I had to remove my seatpost, disconnect the battery, reconnect it and then I got it to talk to my head unit. It has been solid since then, but maybe something similar is going on? Have you flashed your Di2 since the last firmware came out?
