Momorial Day (USA)... who rode?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Only 14 miles. I wasn't planning to ride at all but I ended up going over to see a friend and decided to ride instead of drive.

Led my club ride on Saturday, abut 61 miles. Sunday, I went out with my wife (on her single) and my daughter on the back of the tandem and rode 32 miles with some other ladies, including one who had her daughter in the Burley trailer. Today, five of us rode over to the coast and back for another 72 miles.

Rode Saturday and Sunday. Sunday it was crazy. Almost had a head on with a large white truck, trying to go around 2 roadies side by side coming the other way...of course we all hit the same spot at the same time. I thought the guy would slow down, instead he sped up and swerved between us at around 50 mph...it was close enough I knew he could make it, but my nerves did react to how close his ton of steel was to my fragile human form balanced on two wheels. And that was one of many encounters, with newbie riders (stop yakking and LOOK where you're going, fergawds sake) farm machines with discs the size of volkswagons taking up the entire country road, other impatient cagers....I stayed OFF the bike today, and shortened my ride a bit yesterday. Bless our Vets, but its also beer and barbeque!

Hi! I'm new to this forum and am re-learning how to ride (been 20 years since I had a bike) I've had my new bike 3 weeks and I'm spending some time with my Mom in New Jersey, a very flat area called Mystic Island. Great for getting a few miles on my bike. I set out today to ride 10 miles today. The day was beautiful, sunny with a bit of the wind. Five miles out took me down a road that ends at a bay that you can see across to Atlantic City from. First sign of things to come ... my foot gets caught in the clip and I almost land on my side. I turn around and start back. I'm about three miles from home and thought I might take a detour to make for a little longer ride so I go to turn around in a shopping center and at the last second I notice a lip on the driveway...too late. My front wheel is caught in the groove and my body weight is still in the turn. Both feet still in the clips, right leg slides into the driveway (that's my good leg), elbow hits the ground and then the helmet. Meanwhile, after such a beautiful day the clouds are rolling in and it starts to rain. I finish the ride with blood dripping down my leg and picked a few pebbles out of my helmet. First case of road rash since I was a kid. Made my Mom roll her eyes! Anyway, That was my day. Try again tomorrow!

First, I hope that Ivan_Yulaev and Monster173 recover quickly. Crashing sucks!

Next, thanks to all the vets who have made tremendous sacrifices for our benefit.

As far as riding goes, I did 65 miles today with 4 friends, through the rolling hills of Bucks County. We searched out two of the uglies hills that I know of, and had a good time suffering together. I will definitely be sore tomorrow!

Seduced by the dark side I am. Since joining this forum a foo months ago, I have neglected the true religion of the fixie. Last year I rode my roadie 3 times all year, the other 4880 miles were all on a fixie. Due to the influence of the forum, that trend has been completely reversed. Gears and derailers, easier they are.

Anyway, Saturday I got out on the fixie for a 20 mile spin to try out some "new" handlebars. No riding Sunday. Today went on my 40 mile creaky knee Arbor Crest Winery recovery ride on the roadie in perfect conditions. What a difference from the week before! Such power, such grace, such smooth spinning technique! (Such hyperbole!) I attribute the noticeable improvement to my jaunt on the fixie. I'm sure the 56 miles I rode Thursday on the American Eagle (see commuting pics page 16 post no. 396) had nothing to do with my improved form.

A balance I must find, or, uh, unbalanced will I become!

I rode 40 miles on Sat, it was cool weather and made climbing easier for me. On Sunday I rode 5 miles with my five year old - best five miles. I'd pass him and then slow down so he could rip past me. And today, I did 55 miles baking in the sun like a dead fish. I was expecting fog and got sun. Thank the Gods for the hot dog vendor at the top of hwy 9.

I rode maybe 8 miles today it was beautiful and at our river everyone and their kids were swimming. It was enjoyable to ride in weather of 90 degrees farenheight and clear skys. My ride went well.

My wife and I did a nice 11.5 miles down by the Arkansas River. Just kept it between 15 - 20 mph the whole way. She one her road bike and me on the mountain bike. (My road bike is up on blocks for the next couple of weeks.) Nice day for a ride.

I started my ride at 3pm from my home near downtown L.A. and rode into Griffith Park, jumped the mainenance road gate and rode all the way up to the water tank, cut across and up to Griffith Observatory, and down past the Greek Theater back to my home. There were too many tourists up at the observatory today and on top of that the observatory is still under major renovation so people were scrambling for parking spaces . I figured most were tourists because they were all taking pics of the nearby Hollywood sign. I rode my Steamroller fixed gear for this ride.....first time on a fixed up to the observatory......fun, but not too friendly on your knees.

Not me. I shredded my rear tire Saturday, and the replacements haven't arrived yet. Plus it was too muddy to hit any trails on the MTB, so I cleaned all day.

Cleaned the apartment. Filled up 2 big rolling trash cans and took 3 bags of stuff to Goodwill. Went on the coffee ride with Chainwheel Saturday and got in to some glass down on the River Trail. I guess it didn't help that I should have replaced the tires 200-300 miles ago, but it's hard to spend the $$$. There are now a few 2-3 inch long spots where you can see the threads of the tire. I threw a tube in it that held for the rest of the ride (although I ran a lower pressure), so it wasn't THAT bad. I had actually ordered tires last Tuesday, so hopefully they will show up tomorrow.

After working on Sat., the festive family BBQ on Sun., I decided to do some alternative cross-training: I spent 3 hrs. on Mon. morning clearing out some dried brush and tall weeds on the hill slopes behind my house. Those were some tough weeds (yeah.....those weeds survived even after spraying weed killers before the raining season). It was kinda fun.....with my scythe slicing cleanly through those weeds like a light-saber. Still got in about 20min. of spinning later, though. I envy you folks who got in some serious miles!

Commuted to work Friday and Saturday, took Sunday off, and rode ~20 miles on a multi-use path Monday that was way too crowded.

Saw tons of cyclists out on the roads though..more than I've ever seen, including a group ride of about 30 (I was in the car on the way to the MUP). I'm pretty convinced I'm going to stick to the roads, as I greatly prefer it (no peds, dog-walkers, kids on bikes, roller bladers, etc), AND I can leave the car in the garage.

Rain, thunderstorms and hail kept me off the bike yesterday. Today on the other hand looks to be perfect and after work I am getting out there for a good 30 miles or so.
