Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which bike do I sell?

I have been thinking about this for several months and have gotten nowhere. I really need to get rid of 1-2 road bikes (and other camping/outdoors gear) but I'm having a really hard time figuring out which second bike to sell. Here is the road collection (I am selling one 29er FS mtn bike too...a carbon Intense 29er). All bikes stored inside the house, always. All bought new except the BMC.
  • 2001 Specialized Roubaix 105 3x9 (low miles...sits on a trainer...hardly used).
  • 2012 Roubaix SL4 Ultegra 10-speed di2.
  • 2015 Specialized CruX tubeless made into 2x11 Rival from 1x Rival..have all parts (my "rain" bike though it hardly rains here). It can be fun if used on more gravel roads and smooth trails.
  • 2015 S-Works Tarmac Disc QR- Dura Ace di2 11-speed tubeless
  • 2014 BMC SLR01 with Dura Ace 9000

I'm thinking I will get rid of the trainer bike (the old Roubaix) and put one of the remaining on the trainer when needed. The problem there is that I will not get much for it. Anyway, the next choice is between the Roubaix and the Tarmac. I think the BMC stays. I love the Tarmac too, but the Roubaix is so good for long rides. I'd throw my fat bike into the mix and see it too but it is so much fun the 6-8 times I rode it this year in the snow.

I have three mountain bikes:
  • 2016/2017 Yeti SB 4.5 29er
  • 2013/2014 Intense Comp 29er
  • 2015 Specialized Fatboy fat bike

Since I am a bit confused and conflicted, do you guys go through a mental prioritization process when deciding to sell a bike? Any advice will be helpful. I have no problem buying stuff but cannot seem to let go.

I have to sell a couple of bikes but don't want to regret it by selling the wrong one. If I sell a mtn bike and 2 road bikes, I can free up some cash as well. I'll sell lots of other stuff as well but that is easy...tents, guns, etc....I'm not into all that anymore so that is easy.

It would help some to know the sizes of these bikes.

What is the purpose for selling? If you're just wanting to de-clutter without any real preference I'd say list them all and when 1 or 2 is gone take the other listings down. If you're trying to raise money, list the 3 most valuable and let the buyers decide. If you're having problems letting anyone of them go you'll eventually regret selling any or all.

I'm not really needing to raise money. The primary priority is to declutter but I do have preferences, which is why I am likely not going to list the BMC or the Tarmac at this point. I did buy each for a specific reason, of course. They are all 58s. I wasn't actually trying to sell any here but looking for ideas of how to make the process easier and maybe how to select the ones that need to go. If I had a 3-car garage, I'd not sell any. I prefer storing all my bikes (except the fattie...simply running out of room) inside the house and the house is not big enough. The garage has very little room too.

A secondary benefit would be to raise money and squirrel it away. If I sell 2-3 bikes, I always have room for a new project.

I think it's a better idea and easier, to figure out from all of the bikes, which is your favorite, and then sell all the remaining. And then, start collecting all over again.

I guess pick your most used and most favorite bikes first, then pick your least used and least liked bikes and try to reason out why. I had 6 at my stable before, A Schwinn Ranger MTB ( Target Bike), Dahon 7spd Folding, Dahong 16spd Folding, Trek 7.2fx Hybrid, Trek SLR 1500 WSD Bike and a Nashbar Cavalo Road Bike. I sold the Schwinn Target Bike to make room for the Cavalo, but now selling the 1500 SLR because it's a women's bike and a little mis-fit for me. Then probably I could let go of the Hybrid next and just put better tires on the Cavalo. I could settle for 2-3 bikes in my stable. Folders are good for work commute and probably a weekend "nice" bike .

Got a buyer for that triple Roubaix if it's a 61c-- i.e., would that be the XL or XXL... not sure of Roubaix sizing back then.

Alright, you guys have given me a good idea. I'll ride all the road bikes I have not ridden much this winter...on my favorite routes up in the mountains and down here. I'll probably do 40+ miles with 3,000+ feet of climbing. Then I'll see which ones I enjoyed the most and see if the ranking changes. This should rank the least favorites down at the bottom and I can sell the bottom 2. The Intense MTB is already on the chopping block and I'll list it on my local FB bike page this weekend. If it sells, that will also spur me on a bit.

I actually thought about selling the Tarmac since it is the most valuable but I would also lose the most and it is my only true disc road bike, since the CruX is a cross bike. Let's see how my experiment goes. Thanks for the input and if someone has some other ideas, please post up.

It is a XL...58.2 top tube and 58 seat tube. All are 58s.

10 Wheels: that is a great idea but I can't do it that way. I'd collapse from the stress of selling them all. What would I look at? Who would I talk to? I have bikes everywhere. I go by, touch them, make sure temperatures are comfortable, and even say a word or two to them at times.

XL seems right to me but 58 seems small-- how tall are you?

I believe all Specialized XLs are 58 and Ls are 56. I'm a hair under 6 ft tall and have long arms. Technically I fit better on 56s but since i like tall headtubes and have size 12 feet, I feel better on 58s with shorter stems.

If those were mine, I'd sell the 2012 Roubaix first. Seems the most redundant. I'd keep the '01 on the trainer until it falls apart.
