Anyone else leave their smartphones at the base of climbs during KOM attempts

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I mean, the average smartphone weighs more than the difference between ultegra and dura ace.

I try to find a nice rock and some leaves to hide it under. Put it inside a ziplock. Just never next to a tree because that's where people pee.

I just want to see where this one goes. I see great potential... or not.

You need the phone to take a summit selfie.

No, but I put it in an indestructable case and throw it as hard as I can about 50 feet before the kom line to get an extra second or two on my Strava mobile...

Ancillary to the goal of this thread, for optimal performance one should leave all sensors at the base of the hill and use the phone only for KOM climbs. The accuracy of consumer-grade phone GPS ranges from "pretty bad" to "just terrible." I've seen GPS plots from Strava Mobile with zig-zags over 30m in length-- so even 1 or 2 GPS errors in your favor could cut +50m off of your whole attempt, saving several seconds. A local rider around here only uses the Android Strava App, and has taken a few KOMs despite a lower average speed over the segment than the previous KOM time.

Alternately, put your Garmin in one of those bouncy balls you would put dog treats in, and just whip that thing up the hill. Should get a good 50m of roll for free.

I wish you smartphone people would quit sniping the short segments with the low accuracy GPS in those devices.

Damn iPhone users get a free second or two.

So, yeah, leave your smartphone at the base and get a Garmin please.

When I get within throwing distance of the end of the strava segment, I take my GPS off and throw it. My right arm is much bigger than my left

My first thought would be that someone would steal my phone. I leave my phone at home though anyway. Gear S2 is very useful.

If you climb fast enough and descend twice as fast, no one will have time to steal it

Nah, the current segment KOM I want starts in a guy's garage behind his house. He might find it while I am out trying to poach his KOM.

Meh, I leave my phone in the van. Apparently the rest of non racing cycling world needs to carry one to log pathetic stats. Kinda like those ppl who slap 5k jogging sticker on their bumper like it's a difficult accomplishment...

Are you saying you'd be able to carry your phone if you'd gone with DA?

I bet that has nothing to do with GPS.

I am ashamed to say that I have thought about leaving the drink bottles and saddle bag.

I am proud to say that I have never actually done it. Yet.

Just drink all the water first, then they'll weigh much less.
