Riding and Knee Replacement

Five months ago I had a full knee replacement and while I have been back riding for some time I can’t seem to get in more than about 10 miles without having to give the knee a day or two rest. I’ve been told the total recovery time for a full replacement is 1 year. The last appointment I had with my surgeon I was told I could do anything I wanted and I didn’t need to see the surgeon again until my 1 year anniversary. I know I should probably make an appointment and probably will, but I’m wondering if other riders who have had a full replacement can give me some input. Am I expecting too much?

If you have enough bend to ride a bike you're probably doing well...

Thanks McBTC that's encouraging as I do have that. Not the full range but no problem doing the full pedal stroke. I guess I just need to learn to be patient.

Depends what you replace the knee with. I recommend Ultegra

Knees

Had both knees replaced about 6 years apart they both act different, as in one knee has more ROM than the other, have 2 different bikes and the one feels good and the other takes about a 1/2 mile to get the knee bending as the other, had minor swelling in the last knee i had done, but that stopped after a few months. Dr. said ride as much as i want.

I had a partial knee replacement; I figure the knee was at 90% after a year and is probably 95% after 5; I don't think it will get any better; but it is still a whole bunch better than before. Give it some time, there is still a lot of healing that has to happen...

Thanks guys. It sounds like what I'm experiencing may be normal. It is certainly better than before surgery. I just need to get back to doing some longer rides and lose some of the weight I added through the process. LOL
