Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Brooks B17

Had my first chance to ride this thing after receiving it a week ago.
You know, it doesn't *feel* more comfortable than my old WTB Speed V, but my butt wasn't as sore as it usually is after the 15 mile ride tonight.
If I get into "the zone" with it before Father's Day I'll stick with it. Otherwise I'll try the Arione.

Mike,

Make sure to slather your saddle with the proofide, it will help the break in process.. Once you get a couple hundred miles on it will feel much more comfortable

Yep, initial treatment took 2/3 can. I applied liberally top and bottom 2x, wrapping in a black plastic bag afterward and setting in direct sun. It came out of the bag each time looking like I'd never put the stuff on.

I usually coat the top of the saddle once a week for the 1st 6 weeks... Put a coat on, let it bake in the sun for an hour, then wipe clean.. This has helped me break them in.. It is not that tough to break them in.. I also like that nice gliding feel after you put a coat of proofide on..

A little more expeditious method of getting the stuff to absorb is to heat up the saddle with a hair dryer.
This method is used to waterproof boots with beeswax waterproofing and works great on leather saddles, too. With boots, you just keep rubbing in more and more wax until the leather will not absorb any more, but I don't think you want that much with your bicycle saddle. The hair dryer lets you do this in just a few minutes and you can actually see the wax liquify and get absorbed.

I have about 600 miles on my new B-17. The difference from new to now is fairly dramatic. I have never felt a more comfortable saddle. Now I never even think about it.

I have a new B17 Champion Special I'm breaking in. I found the hardest part (excuse the expression) is arriving at the proper angle for the saddle. I've carried the proper allen wrench in my pocket for the first few rides and have stopped to make adjustments several times. I have it *slightly* nose-high right now and that seems to be the most comfy for me (hybrid bike).

I did do the Proofide on the inside and outside once and again on the outside a second time.

Now it's just a matter of continuing to ride it and get my ass and the saddle used to each other.

Mike,

If you get rid of the Brooks and spend for the fizik before the Brooks breaks in, you're throwing money away.

As the man said: "Good things come to those who wait."
