Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What shoes are you talking about? Vittoria?

Are you saying they fit a long/narrow foot well?

Yes.. do tell. Found these but not in my size (I'd have to hope a 48 would fit me -- usually wear a 49).. but love the retro laceup look AND with speedplay mount supposedly available!

Timely post as I just purchased a pair of Shimano SH-XC7 in wide

I finally got sick and tired of my Shimano SPD-L pedals, which I went to to alleviate "hot foot", which in my case is pain in the joint of the metatarsal of the small toe. Using older and flexible SPD mt. shoes was uncomfortable and aggravated the problem. The wider platform of the SPD-L was partial solution, I just HATED the single sided pedal and need to align the shoe and ergonomics of clipping in.

Thus an attempt to go back to SPD only with a stiffer shoe.

Brief test ride found them very comfortable. Tomorrow's the distance test.

Kudos to my LBS (Brands in Wantagh, NY) who had these at a good price, in stock and a great sales kid who dragged out of the basement a half dozen pair of Sidi's, Shimano's and Lakes for me to try. Then knocked off $20 as one of the shoes was a display. Happy customer.

Specialized MTB shoes has always been my favorite next to Sidi. Specialized S-Works 6 XC is by far my favorite, very comfy and very light.

I just got Shimano SH-XC90 Shoes for about $160 on Amazon. (These are the ones that list for about $380).

They are quite comfortable out of the box, but you are supposed to heat-shrink them around your feet. I think finding a bike shop that has the thingie to do this will be a bit of a challenge, and I am sure they would be delighted to find I bought the shoes on Amazon.

I've only put about 15 miles on them, but they seem quite a bit nicer than my M088 shoes. I have a hard time finding shoes that don't hurt.

I'm happy with my cheap ($65) Shimano MTB shoes for gravel bike rides and ($100) Pearl Izumi MTB shoes for my road bikes.

Both are equally important to your comfort, and the bike shoe is only a little bit less important than the ski boot to your performance.

Agree... but the cheapest bike shoes can be had at Nashbar for $35 on clearance. The cheapest Rossignol or Nordica ski boot runs around $150.

Sidi Wire Carbon Seedplay.
The only thing I don't like about them is that they only come in white.

Right! No way I would drive in my road shoes. I ride Time pedals and with the cleats and all it would be very risky.

Back to the OP's question, my favorite shoes are Bonts. I was a Sidi wearer for many years, but I'm on my second pair of Bonts (Vaypor+) and I love them!

I have a pair of CX237 and also a pair of CX402, both in the Wide variation. They are flat awesome, and have plenty of room in the toe box area. They fit true to size, but I will say the CX237's seem a touch bigger than the same size CX402's. Either way, they're golden.

Lake mountain bike shoes. They fit me like a glove and I'm a hard fit. I have another pair of Lakes for my road bike we'll see if they are as good.

I got fitted for some at Sea Otter a month ago. They were $300, so I hesitated and then went for the Shimanos posted above, but I have a nagging feeling the fit with the Lakes would have been better. At least I know exactly what size to get.

My wife was even encouraging me to get them instead, and she hates it when I spend money on bike stuff.

I've got two pairs of the upper end Lakes with heat moldable soles, one with 3 bolts, and one with 4 bolt for Speedplay.

I like them a lot. Very comfortable, but I think that depends on your particular fit.

They tend to run wide. I have a wide foot, and fit well in the regular Lakes, without the need to go to the wider version.

I've tried Sidi, Carnac, and Lake shoes, but eventually found Shimano to be the most comfortable for me. If you are buying shoes, buy them from a store than knows them, and how to fit them. Buy the most comfortable shoes, not the best looking. If the best looking are the most comfortable (unlikely), you've hit a home run.
