New HED/Powertap wheelset, couple questions

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New HED/Powertap wheelset, couple questions

Hey guys, picked up a used G3 laced to HED Belgiums (not plus) and they came with some Powertap branded rim tape. Is that stuff tubeless compatible?

Also, I am trying to check the firmware, but I can't get the poweragent software to recognize the powertap. I am following the instructions (turning it on, removing, take out batter, plug in to computer) but it isn't recognizing it.

Thanks for any help!

That rim strip is not tubeless. Just use some Stan's 21mm tape. Use 2 wraps. The rims aren't tubeless ready but it shouldn't be too much trouble to get it set up and inflated anyway. I've done it many times with those rims.

Can't help too much with the software question. I record on an Edge 520, then the magical bluetooth thing puts it on Garmin Connect, from there I export the ride file to desktop and then import into PowerAgent. A few steps, but very very easy. If your bike computer is connected to your computer, you can copy the file from bike computer onto your desk top by click and drag, then import from desktop into PowerAgent.

Thanks Dave, appreciate the info. As for the poweragent, I am more interested in updating the firmware, although I don't know if it is necessary, but the Powertap site seems pretty insistent on doing so. I just can't get the computer to recognize the powertap...

Not totally off topic here.. I have a question about my Powertap hub and Edge 520. I'm still very new to the power meter thing. Yesterday I tried to get the 520 to display L/R power balance. The device wouldn't display anything in that regard, but it did display power and cadence as it always does. Do I have to re-calibrate something? Is there a simple fix to get L/R balance to display and record? Thanks!

Powertap hubs don't do L/R balance.

I also ride a Hed Belgium/Ptap/DT Swiss 240 wheelset on my daily driver.

I remember fighting with this a couple months ago. The documented process didn't work for me. What did work were some instructions I found on a Garmin forum:

1. Plug in PowerCap with battery IN.
2. Click "check for firmware update"
3. When it says that firmware update is available, click OK. It will then notify you to take the battery OUT.
4. Disconnect PowerCap, take out battery, wait 10 seconds, plug in PowerCap (battery is still OUT at this point)
5. Click OK on the window that instructed you to take the battery out

Firmware will install

1. When it says that it was successful, unplug PowerCap
2. Wait 10 seconds, plug battery back in
3. Plug in PowerCap (with battery IN) and click configure device (button that looks like two blue arrows)

It will then tell you what version of firmware you have.

I'll give that a shot, thanks!

Similar situation here. I got a pre-owned g3 hub on a Cycle Ops wheel from a friend, and I'm trying the procedure in Kopsis' post, but consistently getting "Error connecting to the firmware server." I was able to pair it with my Edge 510, according to which I have firmware version 3, so I would definitely like to upgrade.

Searching around, I did find this directory at Saris. The most recent version linked on the PowerTap Web site is 7.9.14 for Windows, maybe the same for Mac OS X. However in the directory linked from Saris, it has 7.9.20, dated 6/27/2017. It still doesn't work; I tried attaching mine with the battery in and out, and still get the error in re: connecting to the firmware server. But 7.9.20 did recognize my hub and when I tried "configure device" told me that my firmware was such-and-such. What was goofy was that with the battery in, I get one version of the firmware reported, and with it out, a different one. Go figure. Tried calling them today but they were closed for "a company event," so I'll ring them after the holiday.

Update: tried 7.9.20, and it worked. The hub paired with my Edge 510. Let's hope it stays paired.
