2018 Road Bikes

I was looking at bikes at the LBS the other day and the owner said that earlier this year when he was at a trade show, the reps hinted that the 2018 road bikes would be cheaper, due to the market being soft the last two years.

Who knows if it's true or not, but I'm hoping to buy a new endurance bike next year so I'm hoping it's legit.

Just passing on information. . .

Abe_Froman 06-17-17 08:26 AM

I'm going to be looking as well. Kinda leaning towards a Synapse or something from the british online places.

Im guessing many/most manufacturers are going to be upgrading to the new Ultegra

OnyxTiger 06-17-17 07:15 PM

What are we talking about when we're saying bikes will be cheaper? 10%? 20% average?

They'll cost just as much, but they'll all be fitted with ashtabula cranks.

It means there was nothing you wanted at the LBS and the shop owner doesn't want you perusing the clearance sales at the competition.

Giant prices went down last year, maybe others are following. Too bad I'm not in the market, though I saw a listing for the TCR Advanced 2 coming with tubeless tires this year.

Was just searching for a CF frame roadie at Giant here in Scottsdale, AZ for my brother. They ran out of all the '17 Defy models, and he was willing to chop 20% off the floor model, noting that the '18 models are already on the way in anyways (took that to mean the '17 models were on closeout?) Not even sure if that means anything to anyone, but could be a possible piece to this 'price theory' puzzle we're trying to make sense of.

Seems like Giant moved more bikes this year or made less. When I bought my 17' in like November of last year the factory still had 16' bikes in stock (at least for TCRs).

Seems like A really good time to be A cyclist.Just so many more choices.

Raleigh/DB with their corp sales having some great deals.
Canyon to soon enter USA market.B'Twin going to test the waters in California.
Performance/Access put out some nice bikes at A good price.

But I think my next bike is going to be A Black Mt. cycles monster cross.

Giant has 2018 bikes listed on their site. Prices look to be slightly higher.

along with 10% more stiffness and 10% aero and 10% more compliance

Fett2oo5 06-21-17 08:41 AM

Then hopefully, left over stock of the 2017s will be even more discounted then they normally would be.

slightly off-topic: I'm finding it quite difficult to wait for Canyon to come to the states. Canyon says they will be here for the 2018 model year start.

Abe_Froman 06-21-17 10:15 AM

Is there anything particularly special about Canyon?

They sell direct to consumer, not through retail channels.

Nope. Good marketing with Bikesdirect model.

Doesn't diamondback sell direct to consumer too? I don't see those being real popular and those are available now.

Right, but years ago Diamondback's reputation took a significant hit when they started selling cheap bikes aimed for big-box stores. These days I'm sure their higher end bikes are peachy, but they have yet to overcome that hit.

In contrast, Canyon's reputation seems on par with other high-end brands, with the only real distinction being the cost savings associated with selling direct.

BikesDirect, really? I'd say that the only thing Canyon has in common with BikesDirect is direct-to-consumer sales.

Really? Man that's a nice chunk of cash to have no test ride.

Philly215 06-21-17 03:48 PM

Specialized has the 2018 Allez's up too.

Corp discount code? :D

Colnago has an online shop as well.

af2nr 06-21-17 06:17 PM

I actually just got a message from the LBS today that Giant prices are going up for 2018, which surprised me. I would have thought with the possible presence of Canyon, I say that because they keep delaying when, would have saw prices drop some. I know the Trek LBS says most of their prices are expected to be lower and with the new 18 Domane SL5 being $2K he expects the Emonda to be lower, said it has never been more than the comparable Domane. Who knows though?!

boshk 06-21-17 06:29 PM

Trek apparently just announced a more affordable version of the Domane for 2018. BMC has a revised Teammachine too for 2018.

Do each of the companies come out with revised versions yearly?

They apparently did a massive advertising blunder recently. No idea what they were thinking.

Trek does now have the Domane SL5, in both disc and rim brake, $2499 and $2099 respectively. As for your second question many/most do although many times it is nothing more than a color change. Not sure if they still are but Trek at one time was trying to do away with "year" models.
