Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quintana bikes have an issue with passing UCI type rules, but that one looks to be more like a traditional TT bike. As much as I hate the evil specialized, I think I would take that route.

I haven't clicked through your links to read the details on your ads. I know nothing about the Quintana Roo because it's a Tri bike which I believe has a geometry that is not UCI-legal for TTs, which is an issue at UCI-sanctioned races like US Nationals.

Per my fitter, the Shiv is a great bike if it's geometry works for you, but there's limited ways in which it can be made to work. It's one of those bikes that we knew in advance (from prepurchase fitting) that wouldn't work for me, so it was on my no-buy list. I don't know how you'd know going in, unless you already had experience with the bike. Personally I'd avoid in your scenario.

I only know about TT bikes, but the ones I looked at were Trek Speed Concept, BMC Time Machine, Felt A1, Fuji Norcom Straight, Cervelo P2/P3. The Fuji was hands down the cheapest of the bikes, mine was $1600 on sale. You're pretty much gonna replace saddle, wheels and maybe bars on most of these bikes. With the Fuji those are already low end, so you're not out too much. The bars that bike comes with are dangerously bad though, they HAVE to be replaced if you get this bike. Budget accordingly.

None of the duathlons I'm currently participating in are UCI sanctioned, so I don't know how much I want to really take that into account. I think, if I opt for either bike, I"ll probably lean towards the QR since the shiv seller is located quite a bit further away. Too far to justify driving over to ensure a fit.

Also look into the Fuji Norcom Straight. It can travel in both worlds. And it's Addictionite-approved.

Ironman, et al don't care about the UCI. QR makes a very nice Tri bike.

I'm a fan of Fuji, but I'm not looking to buy new. Seems the tri-bike market is already swelling with barely used bikes that no one wants.

That is to be expected. A fad fling for many riders that just doesn't work out. Their pain is your gain.

Dang, there was a Kuota TT bike for $600 that I was eyeing, but someone else snagged it. Oh well, I need a full suspension thang before I need a go fast thang.

No duathalons are uci-sanctioned, they operate under a totally different sanctioning agency.

My thought is that you never know where this cycling thing will lead you, you might wind up liking the TT thing and going that direction. However, even then, for the most part it won't matter in the US if you have a UCI-compliant bike or not, there are almost no UCI-sanctioned TTs except Nationals. So the likelihood for you personally is that it will never matter. BUT you have a wider resale market when you want to sell the bike if you have a UCI-compliant bike, so to me if you're starting from scratch and buying a new-to-you bike, I'd give a little weight to the UCI-compliance aspect of things. Not make it a primary consideration, but I'd consider it in the plus column when you're thinking through which bike to buy.

You are totally correct that you can get some sweet tri rig complete set-ups used. It seems like a fair number of triathletes go all-in, buy great stuff, and then give it up. I think this is probably a reflection of the personalities involved in tri. If you can find one of these deals, it usually does make more sense to grab it (vs buying new), because you may not need to replace anything on it.

For me, the Fuji Norcom Straight was such an inexpensive deal that it made sense for me to go that direction. But I was really hoping for one of those creampuff tri rig firesales too.

Also, buying used allows me to get a 10 speed drivetrain so my current wheels/cassettes can be swapped around easily.

I wasn't wrong about an illinois plate in SE Wisconsin, though, was I?

I've learned to strict adherence to speed limit in Racine and Kenosha, too, while sporting a FIB plate.
