Brake pads

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brake pads

I am sure this has been covered ad nauseum, but... I have recently begun noticing my Campy Chorus pads are much grabbier than they used to be. They are from the 2014 group and probably have 3,000 miles + on them. Any experience on the longevity of these pads? It may be they have become brittle and don't have the suppleness to give good modulation. They have worked well, but are there better pads, i.e. Kool Stop?

On my old Trek 1200 I rode it over 10,000 miles and never had to replace the brake pads, not one time. Kool stop are good I hear.

No experience with Campy but after a couple seasons brake pad's rubber compound can harden and become less effective, for me this usually happens well before the pads wear indicators lines are fully worn down. In addition they can pick up metal debris from rims, especially if you ride in wet weather, so you should check them periodically to make sure they're clean. I wipe mine down with alcohol, examine for metal and debris - use an awl or similar sharp tool to pick these out and then give 'em a final pass or two with 220 gr sandpaper. This will help prolong the life of both your brake pads and rims.

For pads I've been using Kool Stop Dura and Dura 2 in Salmon or Dual compound for years. For Campy you may need a different model to fit brake shoes.

Well, as they say, your mileage may vary. My "new" pads are at ~50% now after 5,750 miles. Just got a set of SwissStop BXP FlashPro's to replace them, as I expect they'll be totally gone by the end of the summer.

SwissStop blue BXP pads: BXP | SwissStop

I ride a lot in the hills when conditions are not so good and have gone through many pads. I've tried them all and these are the best.
