Ear Plugs?

John Cobb recommends using earplugs during a time trial. He's confident that you will ride faster using earplugs because the body associates the volume of the wind to the level of exertion. The earplugs might help you stay calm even when your legs are searing with pain.

Sounds legit. I know when I have a tailwind and it's quiet I seem to move a lot faster with seemingly less exertion.

My earplugs go to 11, man.

This sounds like the makings of a good 'GCN Does Science' episode.

Hey. Might work for some. Head games are a part of sports. If I throw on music it helps me a lot.

Did not know earplugs made me faster but I do wear one in my left ear on one route to protect my hearing from weekend Harley riders that have removed their mufflers.
The noise has caused ear pain before I started doing this.
I do try to avoid these kinds of routes but sometimes you can't avoid the idiots completely.

But how will I hear the sweet whoooshie music of my crabon wheels?

Absolutely, because when I ride into the wind it gets loud and I go a lot slower....science.

These look a bit dorky but I enjoy being able to hear conversations while riding. I got the pro version because the classic version looks like Elvis sideburns. For me it's not about going fast, it's about enjoying the ride. cat-ears

To paraphrase boxing trainer Teddy Atlas, who occasionally spoke like Yogi Berra, "75% of boxing is 90% mental."

He was indirectly referring to fighters like multi-time light-heavyweight and heavyweight champ Michael Moorer, who had all the talent in the world and punched way above his size, but was often mentally erratic and unfocused.

If you believe something works it may give you that small psychological edge needed to accomplish a goal.

If we were impervious to the effects of sound, we'd all regard Slayer, Spike Jones, Coltrane, Nickelback, St. Vincent, Cretin Dilettante, Hope Sandoval, Melanie Safka and Beverly Sills equally. Try that combination as a mixtape and your ears will be begging for wind noise.

What??

The force is strong in the threads today!

As for the thread topic, just put some duct tape over them. It will make you look more aero as well as OCD about the sport. Win win.

That is a very interesting article. Thanks for posting it.

Good work. I haven't used that in quite a while.
