Would it be 'unheard of' to put a set of 105s on a Pinarello F8!

Every time I read reviews or forums, these nice expensive bikes are all equipped with Dura Aces, Di2s etc etc, carbon wheels.

If you had the cash to buy a F8 or even F10 frame, would you ever consider putting 105s groupset on with 'mid-range' wheels eg Aksium

I have a standard fizik Antares VS Kium R3.....basically the cheaper not carbon saddle and it fits me fine. Technically the carbon version should have the same feel but I wouldn't hesitate transferring my current saddle to a F8.

Yes. Unheard of.
Also putting a saddle you like on an expensive bike is another thing. Quite different to a cheap groupset.

I put Dura Ace 9000 on a 20 year aluminum Raleigh to commute on.

We've had a couple $4000+ frames, that customers built out roll through the shop with 105 (5800) on them. Sometimes people can afford the frameset but not the "complimentary" groupset. You can put one together over time, hard to do that with a frame.

Thats a very good point. If the F8 or F10 frame fits one well, the rest of the stuff can come later.

Look closely at any Pinarello that seems consistent with a 105 budget. Very popular with Chinese fakes, clones, "open mold" etc scams.

You can do it but it's kind of stupid to spend $4000 on a frameset only to cheap out on a budget groupset so you can save a couple hundred dollars. You're not going to put discount gas and no name tires on a Ferrari...

Personally I'd rather have a cheaper frameset and nicer groupset but that's just me.

I wouldn't dream of doing that when you could so obviously spend that same 4-5K to get a really nice bike with a slightly under-top-tier frame, but way nicer components all around. Pinarello Gan ultegra, for the example, or mid-level integral bike from any major brand.

I'd do a CAAD12 with dura ace or sram red over a Pinarello with 105.

We had a guy come into our shop, purchase a Cervelo R2 I think it was - had it stripped, purchased full di2 from us and paid us to swap everything over, Ultegra pedals I think it was, and then proceeded to order and have shipped to us a $300 set of Amazon Chinese carbon wheels. People spend money on weird things, and sometimes it is a good investment and sometimes it is a bad one. I have 105 on my bike and it works really well. Not sure I would drop 4k on a frame and swap it over though.

I know when I compared the 5800 (105s) to the 6800 (Ultegra) it was a no brainer. The 5800 groupset was much cheaper, performed just as well and in total (complete groupset) only a few hundred grams heavier.

What are the benefits of the top of the line groupsets compared to 5800/6800?

If you're looking to save a few bucks, why go for the Dogma? Pinarello already has a budget version of the Dogma, the Gan. You can even buy complete 105-equipped Gans for about $1700

Seems like an odd pairing. I mean, do it up if you want to, but it seems like a bit of a mismatch.

I think I'd rather do some inexpensive Campy (whatever groups those are, these days) and a set of Fulcrums instead of Mavics.

Depends on the pee height of the people who believe they have a say on what an individual should or should not put on a bicycle that is not theirs. Put a Sora group on it on and revel at the grief and lamentations of the shoodubs and iwoodentdodats on an expensive frame.

There is a big difference between buying an expensive frame with a less expensive group and buying an expensive group and less expensive frame - you can replace less expensive components one at a time but you're stuck with the less expensive frame. Put whatever group you can afford on the f8.

You can build a lighter/better bike with a cheap frame and a good groupset than vice versa. My entire Chinabomb build cost less than a Dogma F8 frameset. And that includes a fairly pricey Chorus groupset and what turned into a pretty expensive disc brake upgrade.

The idea of upgrading one component at a time as money becomes available is just silly. First, buying a complete groupset is such a better value than piecewise that you'd be spending way more in the end to build the bike you should have built the first time. Second, if you are so strapped for cash that you can't even afford an extra $1000 to buy the better groupset upfront, how long is it going to take to save up for that groupset? By the time that money is there your high end frame is probably on the clearance rack for 1/3 of what you paid. So now you are putting an expensive groupset on a cheap frame anyway

Put whatever group on it you want. If someone looks down on you for it.. well they're just a gear snob and they can go pound sand.

I have a 4 year old Pina. Admittedly a cheaper bike, the FPQuattro, which came with 10 speed Ultegra. I 'downgraded' to the 11 speed 105, and it's really an upgrade :-)

Japanese groupset on an Italian frame? I don't even know where to start. I guess the only good thing I can say is that at least it isn't a Colnago.

The framesets are available on sale, I think they are trying to get of the 2016/2017s to make way for the 2018s. cheapest I've seen is US$3400
