Wal Mart Heirs to buy Rapha

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I doubt we'll see any Rapha at Sam's Club or any Wal-mart stores. But then again, there was a time when the brand, "Starter", was the thing to have at one point until Wal-mart started selling them.

More cycling awareness, more cyclists on the road. Cycling for the masses in the USA...that is not a bad thing. If it equates to that, it is good for everyone.

I live in NWA and the Walton family are huge cyclists. They are the reason we have a huge bike path loop with trails coming off it, whey the IMBA world summit was here last year, etc. NWA is a hidden bike culture destination and they are a big part of that.

Walmart heirs buy Rapha | VeloNews.com

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/07/f...a-cycling.html

I don't see much point in ponying up $ like that for a brand/image like that only to "dumb down" that brand/image. Maybe they will offer some relative less expensive stuff, but my prediction is that the current image will be maintained.

I imagine that it'll be maintained for now, but I don't have the confidence that that will always be the case; it not a stretch to imagine a pencil-pusher wanting to streamline a little here and increase profit a little there, etc.

Walmart did not buy Rapha.

The billionaire and millionaire descendants of the Walton family, through their private equity style family investment trust, bought Rapha.

There is no connection between the investment trust and the operations of the Walmart company.

That said, it does make for great headlines (great as in fun, but ****ty if you don't like misleading fake news).

There is now, however, an unfortunate connection between supporting scrappy little Rapha and supporting scrappy lil' Sam Walton & Co.

So, how 'bout them Assos products? I hear they're nice.

Did they bring in the Chinese to pave the road for them?

Most everything is already owned by a handful of megaconglomerates anyway. None of the original owners were scrappy little upstarts either and Rapha has been produced in China this whole time.

Many clothing companies outsource to Vietnam and India now as costs in China are rising. Either way...bottom dollar manufacture, top dollar sell. Not that Rapha alone does this at all...but they air-of-exclusivity branding makes them an easy potshot target for selling $15 goods for $200usd.

Granted Pearl Izumi pulls the same thing....but they're not hawking $30usd shaving creme.

I was lucky, on Amazon last week several of the $150 full-zip race-cut aero jerseys were $30USD instead of $150.

Well now instead of not being able to afford Rapha kits I can say I don't want them for political reasons. I feel better already.
