Wheelset Weight Limits

I am looking to get new wheels for my road bike, more specifically I am looking into the Fulcrum Racing 3s.

I noticed these wheels and many others have suggested weight limits.

The Fulcrums have a limit of 109 kg (240 lbs), and I am a larger 225 pound rider. With the weight of my bike, clothes, tools, water, etc, i am likely around 245-250.

Does anyone have any experience with being at the limit of a wheelsets suggested weight? Have you had any issues? How closely should these limits be followed?

As well, any suggestions in the $500 range for a light wheelset that would be durable for a heavier rider?

Thanks!

From what I understand, the posted limits are always about 50 pounds lighter than actual limits.

BITD I used to ride with a ballerina who couldn't have weighed 115#s, and someone who could have been a linebacker.

Guess who was harder on wheels.

My point is that it isn't only about weight, and how you ride is at least as important. If you're a linebacker who rides like a ballerina you'll be fine.

I dunno, the race to the bottom (weight-wise) has produced some pretty questionable wheels. I have a wheelset with a 185-lb limit, and the one time I rode with a backpack with stuff in it, the wheels felt pretty mushy, and I ended up breaking a spoke. Could have been totally unrelated, but needless to say I don't ride those wheels carrying anything anymore.
