best road pedals
 

I been shopping around for new road pedal and having a difficult time. It seems that every pedal has different feature and I want to know which is the best pedal for the money.

What is your price? The $400 ti something or other are really nice. :D :D :rolleyes:

I am looking for something in the $200 range

I ride Ultegra SPD-SL's, but they give me hot spots. I am thinking about switching to Keo's or RSX carbons, having heard great things about both of them from several people.

I have the time RSX carbons - great pedals, good float (very smooth) that is adjustable, and cleats you can walk in (called "cafe" cleats). So I recommend the RSX, although I have also heard others rave about both the Ultegra SPD-SL's and also the Keos

Why do you ask? Is it because you ride the eggbeaters on a MTB and want to be able to use the same shoes?

I have never tried them, but I was looking at them and they seem heavy. Also, when I was riding double sided SPDs, I found that when I went to click in half of the time the pedals were 90 degrees out because they are not weighted. With the Look concept pedals (i.e. Look, Time, SPD-SL, and Pro fits) they are always in the right position for clipping in to. So for me I guess its kind of funny because the argument is normally more sides to clip in to the easier, when I say one sided is easiest. - Just my humble opinion.

my wife recently got the shimano ultegra and she finds it difficult to unlock. I am scared of running into the same problem. So now what are my options

i ride shimano 105 pedals and don't have trouble getting out of em. they work fine for me.

i always hear great things about speedplays tho, like they're easy to get in and out of and are double sided so no look.

Crankbrothers are no SPD pedals let get that fact staright. Quattros have gotten a lot of good reviews within this board. Do a quick search to check them out.

I ride Campy Record Pro-Fit Plus Pedals. I've got 'em on all six of my bikes. Prior to this, I rode Time.

I like the Pro-Fits because they are very light, very adjustable and VERY easy to clip in and out of. Not a lot of float adjustment (6%) though. If you need LOTS of float these may not be your pedals. They work very well for me though as I am always in the Fort Lauderdale traffic and I can clip in and out of these smoothly and quickly...every time. I never pop out though, when sprinting.

I also am a big Campy Fan...so I may be a touch predjudiced....

I know I wasn't try to say that. I was just mentioning SPD because they are 2 sided entry like the Quattros and since I have never tried the Quattros, my best reference to them.


Yeah, I get like a burning sensation on my foot just above the pedal after longer rides on hot days. It might be the cheap $60 shimano shoes I use or the Ultegra pedals. Either way I am looking to upgrade.



All you have to do is take a 2.5mm hex wrench and loosen the tension screw. See the + - spot on the back of the pedal in the picture below.

Yes. Love my Record Pro-Fits. Got SPDs on my commuter/tourer. Don't like them at all.

Yeah, hot spots. That's when either the pedal doesn't spread out the pressure across a large enough area on the sole, or the soles aren't stiff enough, causing the pressure to concentrate in one spot, or the shoes don't fit well. Your feet can end up feeling like you're walking over hot coals. It ain't fun when you still have many miles to go on a ride.

To answer the other poster's Q, I've owned Campy Chorus Pro-Fit's (the originals, not the newer Pro-Fit Plus) and they did a good job for me. However, at that time I was using Sidi Genius 3 Mega's, and I would get hot spotting under the ball of the foot. I think it was more the shoes than the pedals causing it, but I can't be sure. I sold that bike before I had a chance to change either the shoes or the pedals.

Just yesterday I ordered a set of Time RXE's. $65. + tax at my fave LBS (they matched Speedgoat on the price, bless their hearts!). The RXE's are just as light as the higher priced RXS Carbon's, (see Link ) but a helluva lot cheaper. All the RXS Carbon's have over the RXE's is the float adjustment, and really that's not necessary IMO. The RXS Ti Carbon's save about 60gm./set, but are much higher priced, and if you're a heavier rider (say 180 lbs. or more) Ti axles are not the best idea.

The Time's will give you a larger platform than some of the others like Speedplay or Eggbeater's, and hence less chance of hot-spotting.

BTW - if you want to spend for the uber-light's, here's a comparison:

~ Speedplay X-1 pr.: +/- 155 gm., cleats: +/-111 gm. = approx. 266 gm.

~ Time RXS Ti Carbon pr.: +/- 200 gm., cleats +/- 85 gm. = approx. 285 gm.

So the X-1's give you maybe a 20-30 gm. weight savings, and that's per pair. I think I'd rather spin an extra 10 or 15 grams per foot and have the larger platform with the RXS'. :rolleyes: Kind of a no-brainer to me.

Yeah Speedplay doesn't mention the weight of the cleat when saying how light their pedals are and a large percentage of the total package is in their cleats.

Let us know how you like the RSE's when you get some miles on them Wurm.

Look....most used pedal world-wide...for a reason.

I ride the CX-6 as I have adjusted the "Q-Factor" to get the best fit. They are adjsutable both in float (in three degree increments with a dial on the back of each pedal) and in Q Factor.
Very comfortable.

I use eggbeaters on my MTB and RB. Along with SIDI Dominator 5 shoes. I have never had any problems with unclipping or hot spots. They are also a reasonable weight.

Your results could vary!

I just got a pair of speedplays. What impressed me most about them was the freedom your knee has. It seems to me that w/ most clipless pedals your knee is locked in a position and only has a limited range of motion. When I tried the speedplays I had a much larger range of motion and it felt better on my knees. Also, when clipping in and out, you're not fighting against the friction of the pedal since the cleat is what clips on and you just push straight down onto the pedal.

I've got Look A3.1. They're not bad. Clipping in and out is fairly easy. I haven't fallen since the first week of using them. The cleats are terrible for walking. Total cost for pedals w/cleats + Shimano R80 road shoe, about $180.
