Just the right amount of float (for me,) the cleats last a really long time, and they stay quiet-- which was my chief complaint about SPDs. After awhile, they all get squeaky.

Thanks for that info! Those look nice and will give me something to use as a replacement for my Quartz whenever they wear out. Do you know if they use the same cleat? That would be cool (edit: alas, they do not). And yes, the Look pedals are very quiet unlike the SPDs I've used after a few thousand miles. Surprising given that Look's road pedals are known for squeaking.

I just recently switched to clipless; SPD-SL as well.

I too was really concerned about forgetting to unclip, or needing to unclip in an "emergency" and being unable to do so. I've had mine adjusted to the minimum strength to get used to it, and honestly have not had them unclip once from just regular pedaling.

And then, the first time I forgot to unclip at a stop, my panic strength kicked in and I was able to just rip my foot free anyway.

^^ This.

Zactly. I've kept mine at the loosest setting, never have came undone under hard pedaling.

If you're keener on road pedals rather than MTB, consider the Shimano R540 (light action) SPD-SL pedals. I have a pair of these and they have a significantly lighter action than the 105 or Ultegra pedals.

Being embarrassed is much more the likely outcome than bike damage. Everytime I feel because of pedals it was because my mind was elsewhere, except for the time I was doing a way to hard climb for myself, at the time, and clipped out right, but leaned left. No one saw that one though.

Now, I'm so used to the SPD-SL pedals I wouldn't want to go back to flats on a road bike. They're so comfortable to ride with.

I first went clipless on my Mtn bike and used Time Atacs. When I bought a road bike, put the same thing on it, thinking why have two different types and another pair of shoes.

Never had any issue whatsoever and cannot think of a reason in this world to try anything different. I like that I can walk around in the shoes without a cleat contacting the ground (or the floor!)

I would suggest regardless what you choose, any take a bit of getting used to but after awhile there is no reason why you would fall over. You just unclip and stop without even thinking about it.
